Bears sweep Wildcats in season opener

POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0 sweep of Cazenovia College on Thursday evening. Freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and junior utility Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) led the Bears in kills and digs. Scott finished with eight kills and 13 digs, while Topf ended with eight kills and 14 digs.
The Bears and Wildcats battled in the first set, but Potsdam came out on top with a 25-21 win. The Bears buried Cazenovia in set two with a 25-12 score then completed the sweep with a 25-17 victory in set three. Senior libero Sloane Campbell (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the Bears with four aces and compiled nine digs and sophomore setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) finished with 26 assists, two aces and seven digs. Junior outside hitter Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) rounded out the stat leaders with 10 digs and three kills.
The Wildcats were led by junior Kassondra Kreppein who finished with three aces and two kills and freshman Mary MacHugh had seven kills.  Junior Michaela Marotti finished with 17 digs for the Wildcats, while senior Amethyst Thompson finished with four blocks and four kills.
The Bears will compete in the SUNY Canton Invitational starting tomorrow at 4 p.m. against the Roos, followed by a match with Southern Vermont at 8 p.m.
