Cortland Wins at Nazareth, 9-0, in Hubbard's Red Dragon Coaching Debut

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) scored a career-high four goals and senior Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) added three goals and an assist as the Cortland field hockey team handed head coach Tiffany Hubbard a win in her Red Dragon debut with a 9-0 shutout at Nazareth.

Junior Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) and sophomore Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) also scored goals for the Red Dragons, with Welsh also assisting on two goals. Sophomore goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) teamed with senior Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) for the shutout. Reinoehl made two saves in 61 minutes, 46 seconds, while Hourihan did not have to make any saves over the final 8:14.

Gibaldi's four goals are one more than her season total as a freshman last fall. Stein's three goals give her 50 for her career. She is the sixth player in school history to reach the career 50-goal mark, and her 112 career points (50 goals, 12 assists) are tied for seventh on the Cortland charts.

Kimber Nourse started in goal for Nazareth (0-1) and made 14 saves.

Gibaldi opened the scoring 9:34 into the game off an assist from sophomore Shannon McGuinness (Carle Place). Stein scored the next two goals in the 16th and 32nd minutes and Cortland led 3-0 at halftime. Senior Kristi Thompson (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) assisted on the second of those tallies.

Cortland scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second half to extend its lead to 5-0. Gibaldi found the cage off a Stein assist in the 43rd minute and Redmond notched an unassisted goal in the 49th minute. Gibaldi reached hat trick status with her third goal of the game, assisted by Welsh, in the 52nd minute. Less than a minute later, Stein also reached the three-goal mark when she scored off an assist from junior Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa).

Gibaldi put home her fourth goal of the game in the 59th minute, set up by Welsh, and Welsh closed the game's scoring on an unassisted goal with 43 seconds left.

Cortland will host Elmira College in a non-league game Sunday at 1 p.m.
