TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Defending Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Mount St. Joseph opened the volleyball regular season with a 25-20, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday at Hulbert Arena.
Nicole Sherpensky led Mount St. Joseph with 18 kills, and Hannah Vanarsdall added 16 kills. Janelle Davis had 21 assists, with Torrie Whitmore contributing 19 assists and a team-high 12 digs.
Senior Casey Levitt (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) led the Rose-Hulman offense with 13 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Katelyn Race (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) contributed 11 kills. Freshman Morgan Dreyer (Batesville) and sophomore Sarah Jensen (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) led the assist performance with 14 each.
Sophomore Claire Raycraft (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) had four block assists, and senior Kate Dangel (Upper Arlington, Ohio) tied for team-high honors with 13 digs.
Mount St. Joseph improved to 6-10 overall and 1-0 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman stands 9-9 and 0-1 in league play. The Fightin' Engineers travel to Transylvania for matches against the host Pioneers and nationally ranked Wittenberg.
