ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (MIAC) announced the 2013 MIAC Men's Tennis Awards
Tuesday, which included the All-Conference and All-MIAC
Sportsmanship Teams, and the top individual player and coach awards
were claimed by Bethel University and Saint Mary's University.
Bethel University senior Tucker Morris (Arden
Hills, Minn./Mounds View) was presented the 2013 Arthur Ashe Award.
The award annually recognizes a senior tennis student-athlete with
outstanding sportsmanship and exemplary athletic, academic and
humanitarian accomplishments.
Though Morris was selected for his many achievements beyond the
court, he was extremely impressive for the Royals as a senior,
adding both singles and doubles All-Conference honors to his Arthur
Ashe Award. Morris had an outstanding season to lead the Royals in
2013. He was 10-5 overall in singles play, including a 5-3
conference record, with all of his matches coming in the top spot
in the Bethel singles lineup. He also teamed up to go 10-3 overall
(5-3 MIAC) with teammate Reggie Ronning in Bethel's No. 1 doubles
slot as well.
Saint Mary's Head Coach Jeff Halberg was honored
with the 2013 MIAC Steve Wilkinson Coach-of-the-Year award. Halberg
led Saint Mary's to a tremendous season in 2013 with a 17-7 overall
record, and a sixth-place finish in the conference with a 4-5 MIAC
mark. Halberg guided his team into the 2013 MIAC Playoffs, and the
Cardinals featured two All-Conference singles players and two
doubles selections as well. SMU's appearance in the MIAC Playoffs
was its first since the league adopted its current six-team format
in 2007.
Gustavus Adolphus College won both the conference regular-season
title and the MIAC playoff championship and, as a result, the
Gusties received the MIAC's automatic bid to the 201e NCAA Division
III Men's Tennis Tournament. The league champs were
well-represented on the All-Conference teams with a MIAC-leading
total of four singles selections, and four doubles selections for a
total of eight. St. Thomas led the MIAC with six doubles selections
and nine total selections.
Regular-season and Playoff runner-up Carleton had six total
All-MIAC honorees. Saint Mary's and Bethel had four total
selections. St. Olaf and Saint John's had three apiece and
Macalester had a pair of All-Conference players. There were 12
seniors, five juniors and one sophomore on the upper-class-laden
singles squad, and there were 13 seniors, three juniors, three
sophomores and two freshmen on the doubles team.
As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC
announced the seventh annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for men's
tennis. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by
their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals
of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of
competition.
