MANSFIELD, Conn. – Freshman Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, Conn.) scattered four hits over seven innings while setting down eight batters via the strikeout as second-seeded Tufts blanked the fifth-seeded United States Coast Guard Academy, 3-0, at the 2012 NCAA Division-III Softball Willimantic Regional on Saturday.
Tufts (39-5) will play tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. and will square off with the winner of the noon contest between Coast Guard (28-18) and the winner of Saturday's final matchup between Eastern Connecticut and Ithaca.
Fournier and Coast Guard senior Hayley Feindel (River Edge, La.) battled through three scoreless innings as the duo combined to strikeout seven batters with Fournier allowing the lone hit in the top of the first.
Tufts had runners on second and third with a pair of outs as an illegal pitch allowed both runners to advance and give the Jumbos a 1-0 lead.\
Coast Guard turned a key double-play in the sixth just before Tufts sophomore Jo Clair (Glastonbury, Conn.) increased the Tufts lead with her 14th round-tipper of the season. Three consecutive singles led to another Jumbo tally as freshman Kris Parr (Austin, Texas) capped off the scoring with an RBI hit to center field.
Fournier picks up her 21st win in 22 decisions as Findel (21-9) surrendered three runs on nine hits while collecting five strikeouts in the defeat.
