MANSFIELD, Conn. – Tufts freshman Allyson Fournier (South Windsor, Conn.) twirled a two-hit shutout and struck out 14 batters as the second-seeded Jumbos blanked sixth-seeded St. John Fisher, 3-0, on Friday evening in the 2012 NCAA Division-III Softball Willimantic Regional at Eastern Connecticut State University.
Fournier runs her record to 20-1 as she fanned six of the first seven batters faced as the game would not see a run in the first two innings of play.
Tufts plated a run in each of the next three innings as sophomore Jo Clair (Glastonbury, Conn.) doubled in a run in the third and fifth while a miscue on a ball put into play by freshman Kris Parr (Austin, Texas) allowed another run to score in the fourth.
Saint John Fisher had a great opportunity in the bottom of the sixth as senior Megan Zoerb (Painted Post, N.Y.) led off with a standup triple to right field. A swinging strikeout, an infield pop-up and a fly ball to right field ended the threat as the final nine batters of the game were retired in order.
Junior Danielle Leone (Manchester, Conn.) was tagged with the loss as she was charged with two earned runs on seven hits while striking out four batters for the Cardinals.
Tufts (38-5) faces Coast Guard tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in the winner's bracket as St. John Fisher (34-13) takes on Ithaca at 1:30 p.m. in the elimination bracket.
