Men's Lacrosse Falters Against No. 16 RPI, 18-3

TROY, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's lacrosse team fell behind by a score of 7-0 in the first quarter and struggled to get any offense going as they fell to the RPI Engineers by the score of 18-3 against the No. 16 team on Tuesday afternoon in Troy, N.Y.

RPI won the opening faceoff of the game and marched down the field quickly and took the first shot of the game that was stopped by junior goalkeeper Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) who let the rebound get away that was picked right up by the Engineers and put into the back of the net just 11 seconds into the game to open the scoring. 20 Seconds later the Valiants took a 30-second penalty that Rensselaer took advantage of and netted their second goal of the game to take a 2-0 lead just 39 seconds into the contest.

The Engineers continued to pile on the goals scoring the next five goals including a pair just six seconds apart, and eventually scored their seventh straight with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter. Manhattanville snapped the streak 1:03 later when senior captain Joe Daly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) scored his fourth goal of the season to cut the lead to 7-1. RPI added one more goal and took an 8-1 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter the Valiants were outshot by a 12-1 margin with five of those shots finding their way behind Poletto as RPI built up a 13-1 lead on the scoreboard headed to the second quarter. Poletto made three saves in the quarter for a first half total of 11.

After the halftime break, RPI scored 47 seconds into the period to take a 14-1 lead. After the goal, the Manhattanville offense began to possess the ball and took several shots against the Engineers by Billy Motherway, Justin Figueroa (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) and Connor Castleman (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) with all three unable to rattle the cage. Junior Will Sahakian (Natick, Mass./Rivers School) took a shot which was followed quickly by a shot off the stick of sophomore Brendan Kuntz (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) who finally broke through for the Valiants' second goal of the game to make it 14-2.

RPI added three more goals in the third period including one with one second remaining in the quarter against freshman goalie Paddy McClernon (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) who relieved Poletto in the second quarter to take a 17-2 lead into the final period.

The two sides started out the fourth quarter fairly even in shots with RPI leading 5-4 early on in the fourth period, the fourth shot from Manhattanville hit the back of the net as Kuntz scored his second of the game to make the score 17-3. Just 1:10 later with 2:51 to go in regulation, RPI capped off the scoring and finished off the game at 18-3.

Freshman Ray Zimlin (Graniteville, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) made his collegiate debut in the final minute of regulation as he relieved McClernon. Zimlin did not make a save in limited action, while McClernon allowed the final seven Engineer goals and stopping eight shots. Taking the loss for Manhattanville was Poletto who made nine saves and allowed the first 11 goals.

Collecting the win for RPI was James Manchester who was forced to make one save while allowing the goal to Daly. In relief, Jon Yen made seven saves and allowed the two Kuntz goals while playing in the final 30 minutes of the game.

Manhattanville (1-5) will be back in action quickly when they return home on Thursday to host the University of New England at 5:00 p.m. with the game being broadcast on GoValiants.TV beginning at approximately 4:55 p.m. RPI (6-0) will open up Liberty League play in their next contest on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
