CARLISLE, Pa. — Dickinson stunned the 20th-ranked Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team with five unanswered goals to put itself in control of Tuesday afternoon's non-conference tilt, one that marked the start of both teams' seasons. The Blue Jays rallied multiple times, and got five goals from freshman Leigh Anne Flounlacker, before falling 13-11 to the Red Devils.
E-town's Rachael Waldman and Dickinson's Amanda Morse traded saves in the first four minutes, but the Red Devils (1-0) struck soon after Morse stopped Kara Solesky on a free-position attempt. Ali Dawson broke the scoreless tie with 25:10 to play in the first half off a pass from Carly O'Brien. Teammates Megan Taylor and Kelly Haglund followed up with free-position goals in a span of under two minutes that had the Devils out in front 3-0.
Dickinson continued to surprise the Jays (0-1), scoring twice more before the period was half over. Senior midfielder Katie Scheurich finally solved Morse on E-town's ninth shot of the game when she scored unassisted at 14:53 of the first half. A minute and 37 seconds later Flounlacker got her first career goal to start a six-point afternoon.
Twice in the first half the Blue Jays closed to within two goals. Solesky scored off a pass from Scheurich to make it 5-3 Dickinson. Later, Flounlacker scored on a free-position shot to bring E-town within 7-5. Dawson had four of her five goals in the half and Taryn Abbassian scored twice to keep DC ahead 10-7 at the half.
Flounlacker's fourth goal of the game started the second half scoring 3:19 in, but Dawson scored soon thereafter to answer for the Devils. Abbassian completed her hat trick and Lauren Jones scored her second goal, both on man-up opportunities, during a 3-0 DC run that re-opened the home team's advantage to five goals.
Samantha Redles scored on both shots she took Tuesday and finished as one of E-town's three multi-goal scorers. Emily Butler also had two goals. Scheurich and Solesky each finished with a goal and an assist, while sophomore Madalyn Schnader added a single helper.
Morse made nine saves in the game to grab the win in goal for Dickinson. Waldman finished with 13 stops for the Jays, who held a 30-29 shot advantage in the game. DC's Dawson came up with six draw controls, most of any player on the field. Flounlacker, Solesky and Samantha Earle each forced two turnovers, tied for tops in the game. Earle also had five ground balls.
Elizabethtown's home opener will also be its next chance to avenge this afternoon's result. The Blue Jays host McDaniel Saturday at Wolf Field beginning at 1 p.m.
