All nine institutions that sponsor volleyball from the Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the 2011All-CCC Volleyball Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. In addition to the all-conference team, five major individual award winners and a team sportsmanship award winner was also selected. Roger Williams University senior Marybeth Torpey was named CCC Player of the Year, Endicott College freshman Alexandra Gearin was named CCC Rookie of the Year, Roger Williams junior Kelsee Loche was named CCC Libero of the Year, Salve Regina University senior Julianne Barry was named CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Salve Regina coach Lindsay Marshall was named CCC Coach of the Year, and Curry College was the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award.
Voting for the All-CCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among CCC volleyball coaches.
Joining Barry, Loche, and Torpey on the first team were Elyse Barbour (Endicott), Paige Curran (University of New England), Emily Lebowitz (Roger Williams), and Krystie Luczynski (Roger Williams).
In addition to Gearin, second team selections included Sarah Allshouse (Endicott), Megan Clancy (Salve Regina), Holly Hancock (Roger Williams), Maria Kuehl (University of New England), Maureen Pollet (Western New England), and Taylor Violet (Salve Regina).
Earning honorable mention were Claudia Amado (Gordon), Angela Brunette (University of New England), Julie Bruton (Wentworth), Kasey Cameron (Western New England), Courtney DiBiasio (Curry), Jennifer Duggan (Salve Regina), Falyn Torelli (Endicott), Grace Kucharski (Western New England), Danna McDonald (Roger Williams), Ashley Norley (Endicott), Val Smith (Western New England), Kelsey Twarog (Roger Williams), and Birdina Tuiva (Eastern Nazarene).
Torpey, a senior outside hitter from Quincy, Mass, has been a key asset to the Hawks’ success this season. A captain of a 26-3 Roger Williams squad that enters CCC Tournament play as the top seed after posting a flawless 8-0 record in regular-season conference play, Torpey is one of three CCC players to rank among the league’s top-10 in kills per set and hitting percentage in overall competition. She ranked second in the league in kills, rattling off an average 3.0 per set, while placing seventh with a .233 hitting percentage. Also a formidable competitor on the defensive side of the net, Torpey averaged 2.78 digs per set in overall play, which ranks second among Hawk players.
Gearin, a freshman setter from Los Angeles, Calif., has been an invaluable addition to a Gulls’ lineup that clinched the #2 seed in the CCC Championship for the second consecutive year. During regular-season play, Gearin ranked fourth among all CCC players with an average of 2.79 kills per set. Her stellar play helped the Gulls to rank fourth in kills (10.17) and assists (9.39) per set among CCC teams, while ranking fifth in attack percentage (.161) and digs (15.34) per set.
Loche, a junior libero from Millis, Mass. has been a major factor in Roger Williams’ 26-3 campaign. Heading into CCC Championship play, Loche has played in 311 sets over her three year stint, and is ranked second among CCC players in digs. She tops CCC players in number of digs registered with 510 over just 96 sets, which is good for an average 5.31 digs per set. Among NCAA Division III women’s volleyball players, Loche ranks 49th nationally in average digs per set. She has also proven herself offensively as she placed third in service aces in CCC rankings, with an average 0.56 per set.
Barry, a senior from Breckenridge, Mich., is being recognized for an outstanding career on and off the court at Salve Regina University. The two-time senior co-captain is a three-time all-conference honoree who earned first team recognition this year and last year, and second-team honors in 2009. In overall competition, Barry is presently ranked second among CCC players with a .327 attack percentage and fifth in kills per set (2.60). In the most recent NCAA Division III women’s volleyball rankings she ranked fourth nationally in blocks per set (1.51). Academically, Barry is also a standout as she currently touts an outstanding 3.92 GPA as an Elementary/ Special Education major, which places her in the top five among her classmates, and has earned a spot on the CCC All-Academic team three times. Barry is also the all-time leader in solo blocks (267), block assists (138), and total blocks (405) at Salve Regina.
In her third year at the helm of the Salve Regina program, Marshall guided the Seahawks to a breakout season. Last year, she tied the program record for wins in a season (12) and has already surpassed that heading into the CCC Championship as the #3 seed with a record of 15-12, and a CCC record of 6-2. Under Marshall’s direction, the Seahawks led all CCC teams in blocks per set (2.31) and rank second in hitting percentage (.203), and kills (10.52) per set, while placing third and fourth, respectively, in assists (9.39) and digs (15.87) per set. Salve Regina also ranked 15th nationally among Division III programs in blocks per set.
