St.
Thomas headed back to football quarterfinals
St.
Thomas (12-0) used a 28-0 second-half surge to top Monmouth (Ill.)
in Saturday's NCAA playoff game, 38-10. The Tommies are in the NCAA
playoff quarterfinals for the third year in a row and play host to
St. John Fisher (N.Y.) Saturday at noon in O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
UST's defense leads all NCAA teams in rushing D at 46.8 yards per
game. The Toms had five sacks on Saturday and have a school-record
45 on the season. UST has allowed just five touchdowns in its last
eight games. Colin Tobin has 464 rushing yards in two playoff
games. Fritz Waldvogel recorded his 10th career return touchdown to
spark Saturday's victory and became the second MIAC player to
surpass 7,000 all-purpose yards.
Bethel's Peterson named Assistant Football
Coach-of-the-Year
Assistant football coach Greg Peterson, who has been with
the Bethel University football team for 20 years, was awarded the
second ever Bethel AFCA Assistant Coach-of-the-Year achievement
based upon his outstanding level of commitment to the institution's
program as well as his commitment to bettering off others off the
field. The offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach was a
four-year starter on the Bethel offense from 1988-91 and a member
of the Royals basketball team. Peterson graduated from Bethel in
1992 with a degree in elementary education and in 2004 earned his
master's degree in organizational leadership. In addition to his
coaching duties, Peterson is Bethel's assistant athletic director.
Throughout his time as a coach at Bethel, 'Petey' has coached three
of the Top 4 passers, seven of the Top 11 rushers and seven of the
Top 10 receivers in Bethel history. Peterson has been a member of
two NCAA Division III semi-final teams, four Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and 18 consecutive
winning seasons.
A
record-setting number of AVCA All-Americans
Concordia had a
record-setting three players earn All-American honors it was
announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).
Jenna Green and Katie Vohnoutka were named to the Division III
All-American First team while Amy Sykora earned All-American
Honorable Mention honors.
The awards come on the heels of another record breaking season for
the Cobbers. The trio helped Concordia finish with a 27-4 record.
That is the second most wins in a single season in school history.
CC was also ranked in the top 25 of the nation the entire year and
spent six weeks ranked in the top 10 of Division III. The three
players also guided Concordia to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for
the second time in the past four seasons. In addition, the Cobbers
were the MIAC regular season co-champions and won the MIAC
conference tournament.
There were also three University of St. Thomas players to earn AVCA
All-American honors. Setter Ashley Maher was a second-team
selection, libero Kaitlain Wachter was a member of the third team,
and freshman Kelly Foley not only earned honorable mention honors,
but she was also named the Division III AVCA
Freshman-of-the-Year.

Augsburg's
Haege, Phillips selected for Aztec Bowl
Augsburg football
head coach Frank Haege and defensive back Tyler Phillips (SR, Lino
Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) will participate in the Aztec Bowl, an
all-star game featuring NCAA Divisions II and III players taking on
a Mexican all-star team, this Saturday (12/3) in Chihuahua, Mexico.
The game will be played on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Olympic
Stadium at the Autonomous University of Chihuahua in northern
Mexico.
Haege will serve as the head coach for the offense for the
All-American Eagles, made up of 40 all-star players from NCAA
Divisions II and III schools. Haege is one of three designated head
coaches; former NFL players and current United Football League
(Sacramento Mountain Lions) assistant coaches Carl Hairston and
Kurt Gouveia will serve as head coaches for the defense. The
Mexican team is made up of 67 players from teams in the country's
Major League, a league of 19 colleges and universities throughout
the country playing American football. Phillips is one of seven
defensive backs on the roster. He earned All-MIAC second-team
honors in 2011, his third year as a starting cornerback for the
Auggies.
Blazer
basketball off to a high-scoring start
The College of
Saint Benedict Blazer basketball team (0-0 MIAC, 3-0 overall)
scored over 90 points for the second straight game in a win over
Crown College (0-0 UMAC, 0-3 overall) on Monday evening in St.
Joseph, Minn.
Saint Benedict struggled out of the gate and fell behind the Storm
7-4 six and half minutes into the game. Both the offense and
defense stepped up and proceeded to go on a 26-4 run while Crown
went scoreless for over five minutes. Sophomore wings Tish
Alexander (Minneapolis, MN, Benilde-Saint Margaret's) and Brianna
Barrett (Annandale, MN, Annandale) led the run by scoring eight and
six points, respectively. Barrett led CSB with 14 points in her
first career start. Alexander added 11 points off the bench and
junior wing Jamie Wollin (Litchfield, Minn., Litchfield) recorded
eight rebounds.
