Gators Battle, Fall to DePauw in Four
MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Gators have proved all year that they are a very difficult team to play while in the confines of the David V. Wise Center. Friday night, it was the Tigers of DePauw who would find out just how dangerous Allegheny is at home, as the Gators battled but ultimately fell to DePauw 1-3 (25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 23-25).
Allegheny would take the first set with a combination of stellar defense and opportunistic hitting. After falling behind in the set early, the Gators would put together a couple of nice rallies in the middle portion of set number one to take a 1-0 lead. The second set would see seven ties and four lead changes, as Allegheny would come up just shy and DePauw would tie the match at 1-1.
The third set would play out just as the first two did, with numerous ties and lead changes. The set would be up for grabs until the Tiger would take control, scoring five straight points to take a 2-1 lead. The Gators looked to have a grasp on set number four, holding as much as a four point lead. However, DePauw would rally, as they had all night, and flex their muscle as they would take the fourth set for the 3-1 victory.
Senior Audra Batdorff would lead the team with 13 kills, and fellow senior Caitlin Rothman would add 11 kills of her own, as Allegheny would fall to 11-21 overall on the season, and 4-11 in NCAC play.
Senior Winnie Wong would pace the squad with 20 digs, freshman Kaitlynn Long had 16 digs, and sophomore Madie Hudac dished out 28 assists, as the Gators will face Wittenberg tomorrow in their final game of the 2011 season. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm, as the Gators will celebrate their three seniors as they compete in their final match at Allegheny.
