SCRANTON, Pa.—Freshman Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) and junior Jenell McFadden (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) combined for 28 kills and 27 digs to lead The University of Scranton to its fifth straight win, a 3-1 decision over Marywood University Thursday evening at the Long Center.
The Royals, who have now won eight of their last nine matches to improve to 13-9, also received 16 digs from junior libero Marissa Every (East Norriton, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy), 23 assists and a match-high five service aces from junior setter Emily Keim (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), and eight kills and five digs from sophomore outside hitter Katie Newman (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa).
Marywood, which fell to 12-9 overall, was led by freshman middle hitter Kathleen Rielly (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Marian Catholic) with nine kills and five digs and junior outside hitter Megan Schilling (Ringtown, Pa./North Schuykill) had eight kills. The Pacers also received 31 assists from freshman setter Kelly Chadwick (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley).
Keim provided a big spark for the Royals in the fourth set, coming through with three service aces to spark a 4-0 run that turned a 15-14 deficit into an 18-15 lead, which Scranton never relinquished.
Crilly's 15 kills and 16 digs was her ninth 'double-double' of the season and McFadden's 13 kills and 11 digs was her fifth 'double-double' of the year.
The Royals will play Goucher College, Susquehanna University and Catholic University in the second round of Landmark Conference round-robin action this Saturday and Sunday, October 15-16, at Catholic University in Washington, DC. Scranton is currently tied with Catholic and Susquehanna for second place, one game behind four-time defending champion Juniata College.
Scranton is now two wins away from tying its entire victory output for the 2011 season.
