Gators Take One of Two on Day Two of Worthington Classic
WAHINGTON, D.C. - After splitting their first two games of the 5th annual Worthington Classic on Friday, the Gators went into Saturday's action looking to beat Salem College and advance into the championship round.
The day started early for Allegheny, who had a 9:00 am start time with the Spirits of Salem, who went 0-2 on day one. The Gators continued their misery and made it one step closer to the championship round as they breezed past Salem 3-0 (25-19, 25-5, 25-10).
Senior Caitlin Rothman led the team with 11 kills, sophomore Madie Hudac dished out 26 assists, and senior Winnie Wong and sophomore Alex Ceschini combined for 25 digs as Allegheny improved to 2-1 on the weekend, and 8-14 overall.
The win would put Allegheny in the third place game, as Gallaudet and Catholic would both end the round robin with a 3-0 record. Also going 2-1, and facing the Gators in the third place contest was Virginia Wesleyan, who defeated Keuka and Rowan on day one.
The day started off well, but would not end the same as Allegheny would fall to the Marlins in four sets 23-25, 15-25, 26-24, 13-25.
While the Gators may have not finished as well as they would have wanted, the news was not all bad for Allegheny. Senior Audra Batdorff was selected to the Worthington Classic All-Tournament team. This is the second All-Tournament team Batdorff has been named to this year, along with the Allegheny Gator Invitational.
Allegheny will be off until Wednesday, October 12, when they will host NCAC foe Wooster at 7:00 pm.
