SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team finished a 4-0 run through the two-day Maroon Classic hosted by Roanoke College with a dominant 3-0 win over Ferrum on Saturday afternoon at the Bast Center.
W&L (22-2) blanked the Panthers (0-21) 25-11, 25-4, 25-15 to win for the ninth time in as many matches.
The Generals featured a balanced offense led by sophomore outside hitter Allison Rouse (Troy, Mich./Troy), who had nine kills. Senior outside hitters Megan Tomlinson (Petersburg, Pa./Huntingdon Area) and Megan Daily (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), sophomore middle blocker Emily Hudson (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and first-year middle blocker Katie Toomb (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) each contributed five kills.
The story of the match was W&L's proficiency from the service line as the Generals recorded 20 service aces, led by eight from first-year right side Shelby Flores (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos). The 20 aces were the most the Generals had recorded in a single match since posting 23 in a 3-2 win over NYU in the NCAA Tournament back on Nov. 11, 2006.
First-year defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) led the defense with nine digs, while contributing a pair of aces and first-year setter Corinne Hemmersbach (Torrance, Cali./Chadwick) had 29 assists.
The Generals, who sit in first place in the ODAC at 7-0, return to the court on Thursday when they host second-place Randolph-Macon (16-3, 6-0 ODAC) in an ODAC tilt beginning at 7:00 pm.
