Emory & Henry stings VWC with conference loss

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A back-and-forth volleyball series tipped in favor of Emory & Henry College on Friday as the visiting Wasps stung Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins with a 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference loss at the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

Victory has been traded in the last five meetings between the schools, with four consecutive 3-0 decisions. Emory & Henry won Friday, 25-19, 26-24, 25-21.

Friday, it was Emory & Henry that showed up ready to play as the Wasps (6-4, 1-1) rolled to a 19-8 lead in the first game.  But, juniors Kala Guy (Fisherville, Va./Wilson Memorial) and Taylor Allen (Bowie, Md./Bladensburg Elizabeth Seton) and sophomore Alex Kirk (Concord, N.C./Jay M. Robinson) helped spark a Virginia Wesleyan (2-5, 0-2) rally that pulled the Marlins with in a 23-19.

That was as close as it got however, as back-to-back Marlin errors gave EHC the points needed for a 25-19 win.

Six-foot Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C./Watauga) and 5-11 Kimmie Caudill (Galax, Va./Galax) were leaders for EHC the entire night and helped push the team into a 6-3 lead in the second game.  Sophomore Tempe Martens (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), Kirk, and Allen emerged big for VWC  to help create a 12-all tie, but a Marlin error followed by a Tesh kill gave EHC a 15-13 lead.

The teams battled evenly the rest of the way, which included five more ties, before an Allen ace and a kill by rookie Brittney Edwards (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) gave VWC a 24-22 lead.  The Marlins failed to close out however, as Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va./Galax) produced a big kill for the Wasps, who moved in front 25-24 on two more Marlin errors.  Tesh ended the game with an ace.

Game three followed a similar path as the teams battled to ties 12 times before consecutive kills by Caudill put EHC in the lead for good at 19-17.  Martens helped Virginia Wesleyan stay close to a 21-19 score, when errors once again aided EHC.  A kill by Morgan Grant (Abingdon, Va./Abingdon) gave the Wasps a 24-19 lead, which was cut to 24-20 on a Kirk kill.  But, a VWC blocking error provided EHC with the winning point.

Martens helped VWC with eight kills, Allie Bal (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) contributed with 17 assists, Allen recorded four aces, and Erin Paton (Chesapeake, Va./Westen Branch) and Guy finished with 11 digs each.

Virginia Wesleyan plays again on Saturday, Sept. 17, hosting Guilford College in and ODAC match at 1 p.m.
