St. Mary's Volleyball Falls Twice on Saturday
St. Mary's City, Md. – Despite strong performances by senior middle blocker Gena Hlavinka (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) and sophomore libero Bianca Livioco (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg), the St. Mary's College of Maryland volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches to Randolph-Macon College and North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.
Hlavinka totaled 24 kills in two matches, including a season-best 17 kills in the five-set loss to N.C. Wesleyan, while adding two total blocks to pace the Seahawks (1-2) offensively. Defensively, Livioco led the charge with 41 digs, including a career-best 27 digs against NCWC.
Randolph-Macon (3-0), who received votes in the AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 preseason poll, claimed a sweep (25-10, 25-10, 25-19) of the Seahawks. The Yellow Jackets were in the driver seat in the first two sets as junior outside hitter Jessica Sears (Newport News, Va./Menchville) served 11 consecutive points in the first set and senior Casey West (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) tallied five kills in the second set.
St. Mary's boasted a 6-2 margin to start the third set but once the Yellow Jackets climbed back into the action, it was neck-in-neck. Randolph-Macon created separation with a 7-2 run to capture the match.
The Seahawks had three players record double-digit kills against N.C. Wesleyan while junior outside hitter Cecilia Blanc (Gaithersburg, Md./Poolesville) notched a double-double on 20 digs and 10 kills. However, those efforts were not enough as the Battling Bishops outlasted St. Mary's, 3-2 (14-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-14, 15-11).
Junior right-side hitter Shelby Mullennix (California, Md./Leonardtown) added 14 kills while junior defensive specialist Dani Thorne (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) tallied 14 digs in the NCWC match. Sophomore setter Elaina Straub (Burtonsville, Md./Poolesville) posted a double-double on 39 assists and 13 digs to bring her weekend total to 84 and 36, respectively.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, September 6 when St. Mary's travels to Baltimore to face Johns Hopkins University in non-conference action at 7:00 pm.
