Regals Split Pair to Open Season

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Cal Lutheran split its pair of Saturday contests to open the Haverford Invitational and its season. The No. 8 Regals lost in three sets to No. 4 Christopher Newport before finishing the day with a sweep of their own against Frostburg State.

Box Score: CNU 3, CLU 0 - F

Christopher Newport 3, Cal Lutheran 0 - F
Early on in the opening set a back-and-forth battle left the Regals trailing 6-5. Following a mini 3-0 run featuring a pair of kills from Christopher Newport's Emily Kohler the Regals trailed by four.

Cal Lutheran did not hold a lead during the first two sets and after falling behind never scored more than three consecutive points in mounting a serious comeback attempt. Christopher Newport recorded 10 team blocks with all but one coming in the final two sets.

Trailing 16-9 in the third CLU nearly avoided the sweep after reeling off eight straight points. Casy McWhirk led the charge serving during that stretch which eventually gave the Regals a 17-16 lead and forced the Captains to take a momentum-stopping timeout.

The stoppage of play may have shifted the momentum back to Christopher Newport closing out the set and match on a 7-1 scoring run.

Cal Lutheran 3, Frostburg State 0 - F
The Regal bounced back with a sweep over Frostburg State.

Set scores and statistics were unavailable at the time of release.

Cal Lutheran (1-1) will face Stevens Institute at 10 a.m. EST and event host Haverford at Noon EST to close out the weekend.
