D3B: Yellow Jackets sting Tigers

Baldwin-Wallace's first run of the game, in the bottom of the first inning, would be all the Yellow Jackets needed as they beat Wittenberg 5-0 on neutral ground in Winter Haven Florida.

Senior pitcher Justin Novak threw a complete game four-hit shutout as the Yellow Jackets improved their record to 3-4. He had six strikeouts and did not walk a batter as he dominated the Tigers for nine innings.

Nolan Neuschaefer lead off the game with a walk and worked his way to third where John Ulanski's sacrifice fly scored Neuschaefer. Baldwin-Wallace added two more runs in the bottom of the second when senior outfielder Ted Cowling singled through the right side to drive in Jim Martin who had singled earlier and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brian Boveington who had walked earlier was driven in by Sam Wasylyshyn who singled to left. Baldwin-Wallace tacked on another run in the fourth as Cowling scored on a throwing error. The scoring ended when Wittenberg pitching allowed two singles and two walks leading to a run scored by Matt Rollins.

On the day, Cowling went 4-4 with three singles and a double, a RBI and a run scored. Ulanski, Martin, and Wasylyshyn each added an RBI. Wittenberg could muster only four singles and Chris Tabler took the loss as the Tigers dropped to 3-3 on the season.

In other action: Sophomore infielder Jamal Abed drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10 th inning as Case Western Reserve moved to 2-1 in the University Athletic Association conference tournament with a 9-8 win over Washington (Mo.). Four Case Western Spartans had three hits on the day and Zach Fry pitched two innings allowing one run as he picked up his first win of the season.

:fsv:right:box:WPI (6-0) knocked off previously unbeaten #9 Rensselaer (5-1) in ten innings by a score of 7-6. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Jameson Kokolis put the ball in play to drive in Nick Bean who had opened up the inning with a triple. Rensselaer committed four errors on the day, including

D3H: Taking down the champs

Around the Nation
Illinois Wesleyan beat top-ranked Washington U., the two-time defending champ last week. But that alone doesn't win the national championship. For the Titans, the road can't get any easier, not when it leads back to a team that has beaten them twice in three games. But it's a big win for a program that had gone just 40-37 the past three seasons.

Evans Clinchy has more in this week's Around the Nation.

Of course, there's still one champion left in Division III basketball, and that's the George Fox women. The next team that gets a crack at them is Carthage, which may not have played the Bruins before, but at least their coach has seen them. Tim Bernero's take as his team prepares for Friday night's game, in Around the Nation.
• Women's bracket
• Bracket challenge!

Plus, Friday night games get started again, with Sweet 16 games in both brackets. NCAA.com will be producing video broadcasts at UW-Stevens Point and Williams for men, and Amherst and Illinois Wesleyan for women. We'll be at St. Mary's as well, while the other sectionals have video of their own. We'll have all the links here and be constantly updated through the evening as the roads to Salem and Bloomington get narrower.

D3B: D-III baseball and Spring trips

By Dave Kisor for D3sports.com

During the early spring, Arizona, Florida, Texas, South Carolina and other states that offer good playing conditions draw D-III baseball teams from the "cold weather states". For instance, at Myrtle Beach SC, some 65 collegiate teams (mostly DIII and some DII and JUCO) will get a start to their season, opening up play at the "Ripkin Experience".

During the first week of March, at the South Carolina facility, 10 D-III teams had a total of 51 games scheduled. The trips south serve an important function as it is the first time many teams get actual field time.

:fsv:right:box:Head Coach Rick Espeset of Manchester understands the importance of the trip. "We have been coming to this facility for the past three years because we can count on getting games in and getting out of the gym". While Coach Espeset acknowledged that their facility was playable at the time of this year's trip, he stated that from year to year you "never know if the weather will allow play". While one would think that all the teams are on their "spring break", that was not the case for the Spartans, who traveled overnight on Wednesday into Thursday and got six games in prior to returning to Indiana on Sunday. Espeset explained that Manchester's spring break was too far into the season, so the trip to SC was on set dates that could be counted on.

Judd Folske, Head Coach at Alma, points out that "In the gym you can get a sense of individual player preparation, but you have to have field time for team preparation". Adds Folske, "With limited fall practice dates and time, and confinement to the gym during the winter, the early spring trip is vital". Folske also appreciates that it is very important for the new players to gain experience. That is why Alma, among other schools bring their JV teams.

Ohio Northern arrived at the South Carolina facility and like most, if not all teams, started with scheduled practice time, which included batting cage work, infield work on the practice infields "islands" and

Kyle Guest finished the day 1-for-5 for the Texas-Dallas Comets (10-5) who defeated visiting Wabash (1-5) Wednesday afternoon in Richardson, Texas. Guest's two-RBI single was good for the game-winner during the Comet's four-run eighth inning.

After trading leads throughout the day, the Comets went up for good tallying four runs in the bottom of the eighth to overcome a pesky Little Giants squad that had home runs from John Pennington and John Holm in the final three innings. Both home-runs were the first of the year for each player.

Texas-Dallas, which played five games over the weekend, used six pitchers to complete the contest and were paced on offense by shortstop Jacob Starnes who went 3-for-5 with three doubles. The Little Giants were lead by Holm who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a home-run.

:fsv:right:box:In other action : #1 St. Thomas (2-1) fell in 12 innings to the Division I Minnesota Gophers (4-7) at the Metrodome on Wednesday night. Kurt Schlangen's two-out, walk-off single capped a night that included a 17-minute delay when Metrodome lights dimmed in the 11th inning. St. Thomas starter Kris Edwards threw 5 1/3 innings of six-hit ball yielding three runs, one earned, and striking out four. Matt McQuillan had three hits from the lead-off spot for the Tommies.

Stevens evened its overall mark to 4-4 with a, 10-8, upset victory over No. 3 Eastern Connecticut at Dobbelaar Baseball Field in Hoboken, N.J. Tyler Courter scattered five hits in three and two thirds to capture his first collegiate win, while Vincent Vinci recorded his second save of the season.

St. Mary's (Md) Jacen Killebrew went 2-for-5 at the plate and RHP Barrett Enix yielded just four hits as St. Mary's posted a 5-0 shutout over Cazenovia Wednesday afternoon. As the leadoff hitter, Killebrew connected on his third double of the season, scored two runs, drove in a run, and stole a base. Enix struck out three and walked three in five innings of work in improving to 2-0 on the season.
Powered by an 11-run effort in the seventh inning, RPI defeated Keystone, 14-0. The ninth-ranked Engineers, who were

A record-setting achievement by outfielder Joseph Villegas of Mary Hardin-Baylor and a near-perfect game by right-hander Ryan McDonough of Lynchburg have earned them the first NCAA Division III National Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors respectively for 2010, covering the week of March 1-7.

Villegas, a senior from Manchaca, Texas, went 12-for-15 (.800) with a 1.250 slugging percentage, collecting two triples, a home run, a double and nine RBIs over four games. Villegas set the ASC all-time record for career triples in the process, breaking the mark of 16 set by McMurry's Albert Carrizales from 2003-06. On the week, Villegas also scored six runs, walked twice, and stole a base. Included in his week were a four-hit game and a five-hit game. He was named the ASC West Division Hitter of the Week.

:fsv:left:box:McDonough, a a senior from Centereach, N.Y., pitched a historic game for Lynchburg Thursday as he became the first pitcher in over 28 years to throw a no-hitter in a 2-0 victory over Immaculata. McDonough came within one error of a perfect game, as he retired the first 10 Mighty Mac hitters before setting down the next 11 he faced. McDonough struck out three along the way, throwing only 89 pitches on the afternoon while inducing 14 ground ball outs. He was named the ODAC Pitcher of the Week.

UW-Stout's Julia Hirssig and Williams' Blake Schultz have been named the 2010 Jostens Trophy winners. The winner is chosen by a national selection committee that consists of college coaches, former athletes, college administrators and selected members of the media. The members of the national selection committee vote based on three criteria: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. The trophy will be presented in Salem, Va., on March 18.

Hirssig, a senior, started every game for UW-Stout and averaged 21.4 points and 10.6 rebounds in just 27 minutes per game, while shooting 68.2 percent from the floor. A 2009 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America selection in 2009, Hirssig has a 3.96 GPA in hotel, restaurant and tourism management. She is also active in her church and volunteers in elementary schools and for the Salvation Army.
He has a 3.29 grade-point average in his economics/pre-med major and has coordinated Eph team relationships with the local A Better Chance (ABC) program and nearby Berkshire Farm Center (juvenile delinquents in a New York State residence facility), enabling the participants to visit practices and meet and correspond with players. Further, he coordinated free summer basketball camp opportunities for ABC students.

D3F: Garcon grabs TD in Miami

Pierre Garcon became the first Division III player to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl since 1992 and finished with five catches for 66 yards, but in the end his Indianapolis Colts lost to the New Orleans Saints 31-17.

Garcon took center stage for the Colts in the playoffs, first when Haiti was struck with a devastating earthquake and second when he caught an AFC Championship Game-record 11 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown in the win against the Jets that propelled the Colts to the Super Bowl.

To Division III fans, this is nothing new. The most rabid of us knew Garcon when he was a freshman at Norwich, catching four touchdown passes against St. John Fisher in 2004. Or they got to know him when he transferred to Mount Union. Or perhaps when he went airborne in Stagg Bowl XXXIV, leaping over a UW-Whitewater defender into the end zone for a dramatic touchdown.

But if you're new to D3football.com and just learning about Pierre Garcon's Division III connections for the first time, here's some background reading as you get ready for Super Bowl XLIV:
Garcon isn't Division III's only connection to Sunday's big game, however. Adam Zimmer, who played safety at Trinity (Texas), won a Super Bowl ring as an assistant coach for the Saints. Wabash alumnus Pete Metzelaars, perhaps the most recognizable Division III alumnus in the NFL after four Super Bowls as a tight end for the Buffalo Bills, is the assistant offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts. Metzelaars was the last Division III player to score in the Super Bowl, catching a touchdown pass from Jim Kelly in Super Bowl XXVI. Wabash has written a feature on his career. And former Baldwin-Wallace linebacker Tony Oden is an assistant defensive backs coach for the New

D3S: Coast Guard alum delivers in Haiti

Coast Guard ensign Jen Ferreira, a four-year letter winner on the Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team, had four years of academic and military preparation at the Academy, but delivering a baby wasn't part of the curriculum.

Ferreira was aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma, with a crew of about 100, when they arrived in the harbor off Port-au-Prince two days after the earthquake struck. They discovered several injured people and no medical care available. The crew created a makeshift clinic near the Coast Guard base and stabilized severely injured Haitians so they could be taken to the American ship for better treatment.

:google:right:box:"We gathered members from the crew with any medical training to go and help", Ferreira wrote in an email. Jen had taken an EMT course in high school which allowed her to be able to contribute a great deal in the crisis as hundreds of people were injured and dying at the clinic. Many members of the Tahoma had CPR and basic first aid training. Most crew members who went over had no more than CPR and basic first aid, but they were still able to provide vital care.

"I witnessed many members of our crew pushing themselves outside their comfort zone to provide crucial care." But they weren't the only ones on the crew pushing themselves. Their bravery saved a lot of lives. I spent my time ashore trying to stabilize patients," added Ferreira. "I made splints and slings as well as cleaned and covered open wounds to prevent infection. Many of the injuries I saw were way beyond the level of care I'm able to provide however; just taking the time to clean and wrap it gave these people hope."

On Jan. 17, the crew went ashore with the Navy medical team. They had proper training to be dealing with the severe injuries that the crew was finding.

"That day a second woman approached saying her water had broke the night before and I informed a doctor," said Ferreira. "There were only the two doctors that day and they had a lot of patients to see so I told

Around the Nation Year in Review
In the end, yes, the same two teams played for the national championship of Division III football in 2009, and the champion wears purple. (If you're one of those haters, perhaps you can find solace in the fact that it's a different shade of purple than the 10 other times Walnut and Bronze has been hoisted in Salem.)

But there were 1,240 other games played this past season. And 236 other teams that participated. Those stories -- the surprises, steps forward, steps backward and other memorable moments from 2009 -- take center stage in part two of Keith McMillan's Around the Nation Year in Review.

The final column of the 2009 season also takes a look back at some of the first things we and others attempted to do this season: predict what would happen. Keith breaks down the various preseason polls and rankings and also looks back at the predictions our band of experts put forth in Kickoff 2009. That and more in Around the Nation.

We also review the off-field high points of the season, or perhaps, the images captured on the field by those who observe it from the sidelines: our photographers. See their top picks as pics of the season.

One more thing: Congratulations to Bashbrother, who won the 2009 D3football.com Playoff Pick'em contest!

The final 2009 D3soccer.com Top 25 men and women's poll is released and available hereMessiah finished its back-to-back sweep of the Division III men's and women's soccer titles, as the men defeated Calvin 2-0, winning their seventh Division III national championship. Video of all four press conferences.

In the women's title match, Messiah was a 1-0 winner over Washington U., starting the repeat Saturday. Amanda Naeher grabbed the game winner for the Falcons on a goal in the first half. The Falcons controlled most of the play, outshooting the Bears 16-6 and generally controlling midfield play. Clara Jaques had six saves for the Bears. The Bears did create a dangerous chance with under two minutes remaining. Two close shots were delivered from inside the box, but the first was rejected high and the second went just left. Wash U finishes itsseason as the national runner-up at 18-4-2.

In Friday's semifinal action, Messiah beat Williams 2-1 (news conference) while the Messiah women shut out TCNJ 1-0.

In the late men's semifinal, Calvin edged past Dominican 1-0 on a Brad Heethuis goal late in the second half. Video from press conference

:google:right:box:Carter Schwarberg put the ball in the top right corner on the sixth round of penalty kicks as the Washington U. women advanced in a shootout, 4-3 against Lynchburg. The Bears outlasted the Hornets after a 1-1 tie to advance to Saturday's national championship game, where they faced Messiah. Video from press conference.

Joanna Haqq scored midway through the second half to give Messiah a 1-0 lead on TCNJ in the first of Friday's national semifinals and the Falcons made it stand up. The 2008 champions kept their title defense alive with a 1-0 win and advanced to Saturday's national championship game. Haqq's 10th goal of the season ended a shutout streak of 816:59 for TCNJ that extended into the playoffs. Box score.

"I think we played pretty even," said TCNJ's Briann McDonough, who has been on three Final Four teams. "I don't think we got enough shots off or put enough offensive pressure on them as we would have liked." Watch the news conference.
Johns Hopkins had never thrown for 300 yards in back-to-back games before it finished its first-round upset of Hampden-Sydney with 303 through the air. Thomas More gave up 318 yards in last week's 49-39 win against DePauw.
Mount Union's defense is back on a roll, having allowed just 14 points over the past five games, while the offense has scored between 55 and 58 in each of those contests.

You don't have to look at FDU-Florham's statistics long to know the key to the Devils' offense. Heading into Saturday's game at Delaware Valley, quarterback Bill Winters accounted for 345 of the team's 420 yards per game -- 270 passing, 74 running and a catch for good measure.

The season-long leading rusher and leading passer, Winters still isn't a household name, despite leading the Devils to a win against Delaware Valley last season and nearly upsetting Alfred in Week 2, throwing for 240 yards and running for another 119.

While wins have been hard to come by, records have not for Winters. He has already broken the college's all-time records for completions and passing yards and has the touchdown record in sight. D3football.com's Gordon Mann caught up with Winters and his coach Rich Mosca after Saturday's game to talk about his development as a quarterback, their goals for the rest of the season and what Winters' legacy at FDU-Florham should be.

Kmic becomes NCAA's all-time leading rusher
We're headed for a Stagg Bowl featuring UW-Whitewater and Mount Union for the fourth year in a row.

Mount Union punched its 12th ticket to Salem with a 45-24 semifinal victory against Wheaton (photo gallery). Defending champion UW-Whitewater, which finished second to the Purple Raiders in 2005 and 2006, defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor in the semifinals for the second year in a row, winning 39-13 in Belton, Texas.

Nate Kmic became the NCAA's all-time leading rusher in his final home game, carrying 29 times for 310 yards and three touchdowns to spark the Purple Raiders. Kmic's career rushing total of 7,986 yards surpasses the mark Danny Woodhead of Division II Chadron State set last season at 7,962 yards.

Vince Petruziello added nine receptions for 133 yards as Mount Union outgained Wheaton 657-346, including a 432-90 edge in rushing yards. Clantz Liggett had six tackles and a pair of sacks for the Purple Raiders defense.

UW-Whitewater outscored UMHB 27-3 in the second half, and got 106 rushing yards from Antwan Anderson to earn the right to defend their title. Quarterback Jeff Donovan completed 16 passes to eight receivers, with three touchdowns, and the defense held the Crusaders to 236 total yards.
With a wind of more than 30 mph blowing out of the south end zone all day, kickoffs were an adventure, including the opening kickoff of the second half. It traveled minus-6 yards and was recovered by Mary Hardin-Baylor, though since it hadn't landed 10 yards from the line of scrimmage, it was given to Whitewater. The Warhawks were in the end zone one play later en route to a 20-point third quarter which blew the game open.

Around the Nation
Any schedule in the Ohio Athletic Conference faces multiple challenges, and nine teams must take on Mount Union on an annual basis. And since the conference is rather large, someone must face the Purple Raiders right out of the gate.

This year, that's Ohio Northern. And the Polar Bears just had a bit of a challenge themselves in this past week's opener. But, far from it being the (bad) luck of the draw, it was all part of the design for Dean Paul's squad.

Ohio Northern is the last team to beat Mount Union in the regular season, and they did it under extreme circumstances. Keith McMillan digs in in this week's Around the Nation.

Who has a surprising start? Keith details a handful of those on the good and not-so-good side through two weeks. Plus, Keith's First and Ten notes for Week 2 and Week 3, as well as a look at the bottom of his Top 25 ballot.
That and more in this week's Around the Nation.

Herb Hilgeman, who recently completed his 34th year as Rhodes' men's basketball coach, announced he will retire from his position at Rhodes effective May 15. He retires with a career mark of 473-360.

Hilgeman arrived to Rhodes in 1976 taking over a struggling Lynx program. He quickly shaped Rhodes into a nationally recognized program posting a 16-9 record in his third year and a 22-6 record in his fourth year, earning the Lynx their first-ever invitation to the Division III NCAA Tournament. In Hilgeman's fifth year Rhodes returned to the NCAA tournament and advanced to the Elite 8 finishing the 1981-82 season with a 23-3 record.
Current Memphis University School assistant basketball coach Matt Bakke, the point guard on the those fabulous Lynx teams, had this to say about his coach. "It's been an honor and a privilege to be associated with Herb Hilgeman. He brought out

UW-Platteville will begin a national search for a new women's basketball coach immediately, Pioneer athletic director Mark Molesworth announced.

The school will not offer a new contract to coach Tina Kuhle. She was the Pioneers' head coach for six seasons, compiling a 65-88 record, including a 31-65 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference mark. Counting her six years at Clarke, Kuhle has a 149-147 career record. The Pioneers were 12-13 this past season, 5-11 WIAC, and have not had a winning record in conference or overall since going 14-12, 8-8 in 2003-04.

"This was a a very difficult decision, because Tina Kuhle is a quality person," Molesworth said, "but when we evaluated the entire program and looked at many different aspects, we decided it was time to move in another direction. We sincerely thank Tina for her eight years (two as an assistant) at UW-Platteville and wish her luck in her future endeavors."

Considering that Zach Thiel spearheaded the effort to save baseball at UW-La Crosse, one might expect that he is a past member of the team's roster, or even an alumni of the university. However, the Lakeshore Technical College graduate says that's not the case. "I'm just a huge sports fan and follow everything from bowling to football to baseball,"

However, Zach's cousins, Garrett and Gavin Scray, both do play baseball for the UW-La Crosse Eagles. On June 12th, 2009 Zach received an e-mail from Garret and Gavin's mother explaining that the university planned to terminate the program unless $50,000 could be raised in under three months. Zach was shocked.

"I couldn't believe such a longstanding tradition and baseball program would just be taken out of the community," he says. "I was determined not to let this program dissolve like ones at many other colleges."

Four different pitchers combined to pitch the first Blue Jay no-hitter since 2003 in the second game of the doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark as they won 15-0. The no-hitter came just one day shy of the eight-year anniversary of the last Blue Jay no-hitter. Jeremy Brown pitched a no-hitter against Lakeland on March 8, 2003. With a game one win by a score of 13-4, Johns Hopkins opens their season with a 2-0 record.

In the nightcap, the four pitchers combined to allow no runs, no hits, 11 strikeouts and only four walks. Senior Greg Harbeck recorded the win by pitching six innings and recording six strikeouts.

Sophomore Alex Eliopoulos entered the game next and pitched one inning. Sophomore Lucas Henneman and senior Andrew Pevsner each struck out two batters in their respective innings of work.

Not to be overshadowed by the pitchers, multiple hitters had great first days at the plate.

Doug Eisenman worked out of a bases-loaded ninth-inning jam and Central silenced Westminster 6-1 to complete a four-game sweep of weekend games Sunday. Earlier Sunday the Dutch hammered Grinnell, 18-6, in seven innings.

Eisenman threw four shutout innings to pick up his first save in relief of Ryan Goetzinger, who recorded his first collegiate win in his Central debut. Goetzinger struck out six batters in five innings, scattering five hits while walking one.

"Ryan pitched out of a tough jam early and showed what he's made of," coach Adam Stevens said. "For a freshman, he showed a lot of toughness out there."
After Central yielded a run in the first, Ben Tressel launched his first collegiate home run, a shot to right field, to lead off the third inning. Tressel scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, singling, stealing second and scoring on a two-out hit by Anthony Miller. Jarred Lackey had

Three of Saturday night's regional finals were so good, they needed extra time to finish them.

The best was in Maine where Babson outlasted Colby 76-73 in double overtime. The teams took turns holding -- and losing -- leads throughout the night. Babson led the entire first half, though only by two at the break. Julianne Kowalski drilled a three for Colby to give the White Mules their first lead early in the second half. Colby led for most of the second half until the Beavers took a one point lead with 17 seconds left. Kowalski hit one of two free throws to send the game to overtime. Extra time followed the same pattern. Colby led for most of the first overtime, but couldn't finish the Beavers off. Babson led for all of the second overtime and, when Kowalski missed a three pointer
