D3baseball.com: Tournament field released

Will it be Tim Kiely carrying Trinity (Conn.) to a regional sweep, keeping the Bantams' undefeated streak alive? Will Kurt Yacko take Chapman to another Championship appearance? Can Matt Tone be the missing piece of a national championship that has eluded Cortland State for years? Will Kenny Moreland put a finishing touch on a stellar career with Christopher Newport and deny Salisbury and Johns Hopkins a spot in Appleton? These and other question will be answered this week as the number of teams seeking a D-III national championship in baseball number 54.

After many hours of speculation on Sunday, the NCAA released the field of 54 on Monday morning. Missing from this year's field are two teams from last year's Championship round. Marietta came within one win of a playoff bid and Emory was narrowly beat out for the last Pool B bid by Cal State East Bay. Returning to defend their national championship is Kean.

Not a fan of the selections? Can't figure out why your team wasn't chosen? Come vent on our blog, the Daily Dose, and our Division III baseball experts will try to help you find peace, or a sympathetic ear.

The story this year is that of the win streaks. Three teams entering the playoffs have a winning streak of 30 or more games on the season. Cortland State has won 34 in a row and with one more win will tie Salisbury for the second longest streak this year. Trinity (Conn.) has yet to lose a game and with its 37th straight victory qualified for this year's playoffs with an undefeated season.

None of these teams are strangers to the playoffs but Grove City and Knox are uncommon names to hear at playoff time. Both teams got fitted for Cinderella slippers at their conference tournaments. Grove City upset team after team as it rolled through the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament. Knox found itsrlf needing to win two games against Ripon on Saturday and did so, qualifying at 15-23 and denying the Red Hawks a

Trinity (Conn) completed the season and NESCAC conference tournament undefeated and will wait tonight to see who they will play on the NCAA tournament. With the completion of the NESCAC championship game, all 34 conference bids have been awarded. See Playoff Central for the list. Pool B and C bids will be announced Monday morning.

In the New York region, RPI beat St. Lawrence 13-4 in the Liberty League Championship game to claim the automatic bid.

With the SLIAC playoffs washed out, Webster gets the tournament win and the automatic bid to the playoffs starting later this week.

Pitt-Bradford defeated Penn State-Behrend, 4-3 on Saturday but Penn State-Behrend came back today to win 9-8 over Pitt-Bradford to claim the AMCC Championship.

In a game postponed by rain and wet grounds, St. Thomas easily handled St. Olaf winning 13-1. With the win, the Tommies win the MIAC championship and automatic playoff bid (photo gallery).

Kurtis Brondyke is following up his standout football season at Central with a stellar track season as well. The freshman, who was a D3football.com second-team All-Region punter, won the high jump competition at the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, with a best of 6 feet, 6-1/4 inches, and was second in the long jump, at 23 feet, 2-3/4 inches.

He has previously provisionally qualified for the national meet (May 22-24 at Oshkosh, Wis.) in both events.

Brondyke made a name for himself earlier in the season, when he was the IIAC's player of the week (not special teams player) in football after he landed three of his seven punts inside the 5-yard line in a 17-14 win against Loras, including two fourth-quarter punts that pinned the Duhawks at the 1-yard line.

He's not the only Dutch football player lighting up the track for coach Kevin Sanger, himself a former Central star on the gridiron. Guy Dierikx won the conference 400-meter title for the third straight year in 47.92 seconds, a season-best effort and well under the NCAA provisional-qualifying mark. Dierikx, a third-team All-American cornerback, is just the fourth Central athlete to win three consecutive men's league titles in the same event. Dierikx also anchored Central's first-place 4x400-meter relay team.

Central finished second to Wartburg at the meet.

D3hoops.com: Champion's coach goes to Division II job

Howard Payne women's basketball coach Chris Kielsmeier announced today that he will be leaving Howard Payne to take the head women's basketball coaching position at Division II Wayne State in Wayne, Neb.

After leading the Lady Jackets to the Division III national championship, a perfect season at 33-0, and five consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins Chris Kielsmeier looks to face a new challenge at Wayne State. Kielsmeier will take over a Wayne State program that went 22-10 last season and reached the NCAA Division II regional semifinals. Howard Payne will conduct a national search for his replacement.

"It was a decision to get closer to home and to take another step my in professional career," Kielsmeier, an Iowa native, said. "It wasn't an easy decision in any way. It still isn't and it won't be for some time. You go to college and after that, to me, you're just always trying to push yourself in your professional career. For nine years I did that here. I feel it's the next step in my career, but the biggest thing is its closer to home. It's four hours from my house, where my family lives."

Kielsmeier finished his eighth year as head coach at Howard Payne as the winningest women's basketball coach in HPU history, with a record of 179-44.

D3football.com: Hendrix adds football

Division III football will come to Arkansas after the Hendrix College Board of Trustees decided to add the sport, contingent on the ability to raise start-up costs through external sources.

Hendrix, which began studying the feasibility a year ago, will be the only Division III football program in Arkansas.

"Athletics have always been secondary to academics here at Hendrix, and that will never change," said president J. Timothy Cloyd in a release. "We believe that Division III athletics enhances the whole person academically by providing opportunities to compete athletically against our peer institutions, and adding (football and women's lacrosse) only increases the opportunity for our students to compete on the playing field."

The Warriors discontinued their football program after 1960, citing the cost of fielding a team and frustration with the inability to compete against other Arkansas colleges offering athletic scholarships. A target date for launching the football program has not been established, but at this point in the year, either 2009 or 2010 are possibilities.

Hendrix is a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, which recently added Austin (2006), Colorado College (2007) and Birmingham-Southern (2007). Southwestern and Oglethorpe are the only two SCAC members without a football program. Hendrix would be the 10th football member of the conference.

D3sports.com: Hobart returns to D-III in lacrosse

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges board of trustees voted to reclassify Hobart lacrosse from Division I to Division III. Citing the changing landscape of collegiate lacrosse and the challenges in recruiting talented student-athletes at the Division I level without scholarships, the board voted to return to Division III starting with the 2008-09 academic year.

"The Board recognizes that the college lacrosse landscape has changed dramatically in the past decade," says David Deming, the chair of the board of trustees. "Moving to Division III will level the playing field for our coaches in recruitment and our students in competition."

Reclassifying programs are not eligible for the NCAA tournament for the first two years in their new division. Hobart will request a waiver, but 2011 is expected to be the first season in which the Statesmen would be eligible for the Division III lacrosse playoffs. The requirement allows Division I-caliber players to graduate from the program and for the program to make compliance adjustments to Division III regulations and policies.

"The resources required in Division I lacrosse are moving toward what is required in Division I football and basketball," says long-time Hobart athletic director Mike Hanna. "This resource inequity requires a solution that honors our players and fans while also maintaining the integrity of our history. Division III, which is far more competitive today than when we moved to Division I in 1995, offers us better opportunities for the future."

Presented with pending changes in NCAA scheduling regulations, the colleges began studying the multi-division option in 1993 and opted to move to Division I to preserve the quality of its regular season schedule and scheduling relationships with several longtime rivals such as Cornell, Penn State and Syracuse. The new rules required Division I schools to limit their schedules to other Division I programs.

The Statesmen competed as an independent until 2000, when Hobart joined the Patriot League as an associate member. Four years later, the conference changed its membership requirements, which forced Hobart out of the league. In 2005, the Statesmen joined the competitive ECAC Lacrosse League, which includes heavyweights Georgetown, Loyola and UMass.

D3football.com: Studebaker, Garcon get sixth-round calls

Two Division III players were drafted and others have signed contracts or been invited to minicamps.

Wheaton defensive end Andy Studebaker came off the board first, going to the Eagles with the No. 203 overall pick. He's projected as an outside linebacker in the NFL. Mount Union wide receiver Pierre Garcon went two picks later, to the Indianapolis Colts, at pick No. 205. They were the only two D-III players drafted.

Studebaker played in just five games for the Thunder this season before injuring his foot. He had six and a half tackles for loss and five sacks in that time, finishing his Wheaton career with 30 sacks.

Garcon caught 67 passes for 955 yards and 14 touchdowns for Mount Union in the Purple Raiders' run to the Stagg Bowl. "He's probably in truth a work in progress, but we'll see," Colts president Bill Polian said on the team's Web site. "All of the measurable(s) are there. He certainly would have been the first guy we went after after the draft had we not drafted him."

And if your favorite player isn't drafted, don't worry -- Division III's most prominent player currently in the NFL, John Carroll's London Fletcher, wasn't drafted either. Check out more Division III football players signing free agent deals.

D3hoops.com: First-timers, again

Last year it was Amherst and DePauw bringing home Walnut and Bronze on their first trip to the Division III basketball championship game. This year, it was Wash U and Howard Payne.

For each program, however, the firsts extend beyond the basketball title. For Wash U, it was the first national championship in any men's sport, while Howard Payne won the first national title in the history of the American Southwest Conference.

Wash U rode an incredible weekend from Troy Ruths to the title, including a 90-68 win against Amherst in the national championship game. More men's coverage includes our title game photo gallery and final bracket.

Howard Payne rolled twice in Holland, including a 68-54 win against Messiah for the title. More women's coverage includes our title game photo gallery and final bracket.

Ruths and Howard Payne's Meia Daniels were named the D3hoops.com Players of the Year. We spoke to both on our final Hoopsville broadcast of the season.

Division III basketball recently made news outside of Division III: The movement to form a Division IV was dealt a huge blow when the NCAA discontinued the attempt, citing survey responses from Division III schools that reflected an overwhelming lack of interest. And when Winona State won the Division II men's basketball title, it was a feather in Division III's cap as well. Winona lost just one game all season, to Division III St. Thomas.

D3soccer.com: Drive for D-IV dies

The movement to subdivide Division III or create a Division IV was halted after Division III members' survey responses reflected a lack of interest, according to an article in the NCAA News.

Division III's anticipated growth, projected to be to 480 overall members by 2020, prompted a small group of Division III institutions to call for breaking the division in two. However, the movement apparently failed to draw enough interest.

The full survey results will be announced April 9. However, the preliminary results were, according to the NCAA News piece, "consistent with the level of opposition that was expressed during an NCAA Convention discussion of the working group's proposal."

The debate has featured a great deal of rhetoric, but lacked solid proposals. Southwestern University president Jake Schrumm wrote in a newspaper editorial in January: "Those of us who espouse the concept of Division III got here first, and this division was created for us. If some in our division can't abide by the structured guidelines demanded by a scholar-athlete, then they should leave Division III and be comfortable in a newly created Division IV."

The Capital Athletic Conference put a statement out in February asking the Division IV faction for details. "The Capital Athletic Conference asks that those who desire change come forward and help us understand your vision. Provide the membership an opportunity to decide its future from a position of intellectual strength rather than from assumptions and possible miscommunication. The landscape we develop for our future student-athletes deserves much thoughtful and honest consideration of the facts and issues."

Division III went through a reform process at the 2004 NCAA Convention which eliminated the so-called routine redshirt, aimed at bringing the increasingly diverse population of D-III schools closer together.

A new division or subgrouping would have needed 150 overall members in order to be viable, according to the NCAA's initial research. The NCAA's research identified more than 10 conferences which would be candidates to join a division with more restrictions, including, surprisingly, the WIAC.

Pierre Garcon certainly made his presence felt in Division III football, from his conference rookie of the year debut at Norwich to three Stagg Bowl appearances with Mount Union.

But it was clear fairly early into his career that Garcon's football life would not be done after Mount Union. While stats in football at the Division III level may not carry much weight in the NFL, speed transcends that, and he has plenty.

Two Division III football players were drafted last year, including UW-Whitewater Derek Stanley, who returned kickoffs for the St. Louis Rams last season.

So what's next for Garcon? Callum Borchers of Imprint Magazine takes a look at Garcon's preparation for the NFL draft, those who preceded him and the ultimate goal.

D3soccer.com: Washington University hires Wartburg coach

Washington U. athletics director John Schael named Jim Conlon as the Bears' new women's soccer coach. Conlon spent eight seasons as the head women's and men's soccer coach at Wartburg and is the third women's soccer coach in Washington U. history.

Conlon replaces Wendy Dillinger, who spent six years as the head coach at Wash U, before resigning to take the same position at Division I Iowa State.

"I am excited to be a part of the next chapter of the Washington University women's soccer program," Conlon said. "Washington University is nationally recognized not only for its accomplishments on the field, but also for its academic endeavors, and I look forward to being able to graduate scholar champions. My family and I are excited about the move to the St. Louis area, and I hope to bring a women's soccer national championship to Washington University."

The Bears advanced to the sectional semifinals this past season before falling 1-0 to then-unbeaten The College of New Jersey.

As the first full-time soccer coach in Wartburg history, Conlon posted a 108-48-10 overall record with the men's team and 96-57-5 with the women's team. He led the men's squad to five NCAA appearances, advancing to the sectional semifinals in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and to the sectional final in 2004. In 2007, the Wartburg women's team won the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and advanced to the NCAA sectional round, the squad's first NCAA berth in school history.

"As both the women's and men's head coach at Wartburg College, Jim established a pair of competitive soccer programs," Schael said. "His eight years of head coaching experience within a private university setting at the NCAA Division III level prepare him for the challenges associated with the continued development of Washington University's women's soccer program. He is familiar with the needs and priorities of the student-athlete and is experienced in the organization, administration and direction needed to create a winning atmosphere."

Conlon was named the NCAA Division III West Region Coach of the Year in 2006, and garnered IIAC Coach of the Year honors in 2003 and 2004. He has

D3soccer.com: Wheaton, Middlebury win titles

Wheaton (Ill.) won its third Division III women's soccer title in four seasons while Middlebury won its first men's soccer title by 1-0 scores that were hardly identical.

The Thunder, who defeated Messiah, finished 27-0 and end the 2007 season with 45 consecutive wins. Jami Hermann picked up a loose ball 42:50 into the match and bended it past Messiah goalie Brindley Beckwith for the 1-0 lead. Middlebury (18-2-2) defeated Trinity (Texas) on penalty kicks and dealt the Tigers (23-1) their only loss of the season.

Wheaton outshot the Falcons 18-9 and held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks, but goalkeeper Kristin Eggert, an all-tournament selection, made the save of the match with a diving stop in the final five minutes. "I was focused pretty intensely on that ball. I knew that all of the girls around me had worked so hard to keep that zero on the scoreboard, so I really wanted to keep it as well."

The Thunder join The College of New Jersey with three championships. UC-San Diego, which has since moved to Division II, won five Division III women's soccer titles.

The scoreless first half of the men's championship game was controlled by Trinity, as the Tigers outshot Middlebury 13-6 in the opening frame. Trinity's leading scorer, Patrick Floeck, had the first major opportunity, sailing a one-touch volley over the crossbar after a long throw-in from the left corner. Floeck went airborne later in the half, trying to put a head on a cross from the left sideline, but he collided with Bush and had to leave the game.

Middlebury's best shot came shortly before the half. Andrew Banadda chased down a loose ball in the box with just over a minute before halftime, and his one-touch blast rocketed off the left post and back into play. Casey Ftorek was in position for the rebound, but his shot was off the mark to the right.

With 15 minutes left in regulation, Middlebury found an opening to Ftorek streaking down the left side, but his shot from outside the penalty area bounced wide right. Later, with the clock counting down

Defiance has hired Kyle Brumett as its new head coach for the men's basketball program. Brumett is set to begin his post with the Yellow Jackets on May 19.

"I am absolutely elated that Coach Brumett has accepted the Yellow Jacket position," athletic director Dick Kaiser stated. "I believe his personality and his basic coaching philosophies are a great match for the players that are currently in the DC program.

"Coach Brumett comes from a blue collar background and knows what hard work is all about. I know he is going to roll up his sleeves and get after it the minute he walks on the DC campus. There is no doubt in my mind that he will have success at Defiance College. Fortunately for us, I believe that we have caught another rising star that will make a solid impact on the men's basketball program, the college and the community as

"While we all are sad to see Kelly go, we fully respect her desire to seek new challenges in her life," Ralph said. "Coach Mahlum is an excellent coach and teacher of the game of basketball. Colorado College was fortunate to have her services for so long."

In seven seasons at the helm, Mahlum guided the Tigers to a 64-106 overall record, the best for a head coach since Beth Branson compiled a 24-43 mark from 1985 through 1988.

In 2007-08, Mahlum led CC into league play as a new member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. In their inaugural year in the competitive SCAC, the Tigers went 8-6, finished second in the Western Division and made the semifinals
