Carroll's Sweet 16 coach resigns

After seven years at the helm of the Carroll men's basketball program, David Schultz has resigned his position to pursue other opportunities with the Waukesha school district, Pioneers athletic director Kris Jacobsen announced.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time coaching and working at Carroll. I loved coaching every team and player over the past seven seasons," said Schultz, No. 2 in wins in the program's history at 109-64. "The athletic department and Kris Jacobsen did all they could, but in the end this is a decision that is in the best interest of my family."

Schultz, hired at Carroll prior to the 2002-03 season, took over a Pioneers team that finished 2-21 during the 2001-02 season and built the program into a Midwest Conference contender. The Pioneers reached the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2007, making the Sweet 16 two seasons ago after beating Augustana and St. Thomas on their home floors.

"I am very proud of what the program accomplished and I feel I have left the program in better shape than when I arrived," Schultz added. "I am thankful to have been able to build lifelong friendships with players, family and staff at the university."

Schultz has maintained dual part-time employment over the past several years that included coaching at Carroll while also working as a part-time physical education teacher in the Waukesha school district. He resigned from Carroll to accept full-time employment in the Waukesha school district.

Jacobsen said the resignation came as a surprise, saying Carroll was in the process of putting together a full-time employment package. "I am very disappointed that Coach Schultz decided to end his tenure as the Carroll men's basketball coach," she said. "The university has explored full-time employment opportunities for Coach Schultz on numerous occasions and it was our hope that he would become a full-time member of the university."

A national search for Schultz's successor will begin immediately.

George Fox writes name on perfect list

Capital in 1995. UW-Oshkosh in 1996. Howard Payne last year. Washington U. twice in 1999 and 2000. And now you can add George Fox in 2009 to the list of undefeated women's Division III basketball national champions.

The Bruins built a 14 point second half lead and held off a furious Washington U. rally to complete an undefeated season, 60-53. George Fox looked like it would cruise to the title after Keisha Gordon hit a three to give the Bruins a 49-35 lead with 10:11 to play. But the Bears scored 15 of the next 17 points to close within one. Kristen Shielee answered with a basket and then another in the final two minutes to put the game away. It was a magical run for a team that graduated seven seniors last spring and had no returning starters.

The Bruins will have plenty of hardware to bring back to Oregon. Shielee was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player joined by teammate Sage Indendi, Janice Evans and Jaimie McFarlin of Washington U. and Hillary Klimowicz of The College of New Jersey on the All-Tournament team. Scott Rueck was named the D3hoops.com Coach of the Year and Sage Indendi the Rookie of the Year. Klimowicz was named the Player of the Year.

Before the title game we named the D3hoops.com All-Americans, with Klimowicz joining Keli Ward of York (Pa.), Leigh Ann Burke of DeSales, Jessica McEntee of NYU and Megan Scheele of Edgewood on the first team. After the game Sage Indendi joined us to discuss the Bruins' remarkable season and her own journey to George Fox.
Back-to-back Bears

Washington University joined the ranks of repeat winners in Division III men's basketball, as the No. 2 Bears held off a rally attempt by No. 6 Richard Stockton to win the 2009 Division III men's basketball national championship, 61-52.

Tyler Nading scored 20 points on 9-for-11 shooting, while Sean Wallis had a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists in the win. Photo gallery.

Nading made sure his teammates knew that history would not be allowed to repeat itself, as Evans Clinchy writes. The previous two national champions had lost in the following year's title game.

Richard Stockton rallied to cut a 16-point deficit to eight, but couldn't get over the hump. The Ospreys were led by Santini Lancioni's 19 points. Scroll down for more women's coverage and for coverage of Friday's semifinals. Guilford won the third-place game, 79-67.

Wallis was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championships, with Nading and Aaron Thompson of Wash U joining him on the All-Tournament team, along with Michael Farrow of Richard Stockton, James McNally of Franklin and Marshall and Clay Henson of Guilford. Thompson, Wallis and Tyler Sanborn were also named D3hoops.com All-Americans in an announcement made on the pregame show for the national title game. MIT guard Jimmy Bartolotta was named the D3hoops.com Player of the Year, while Wooster guard Justin Hallowell was named Rookie of the Year and Franklin and Marshall's Glenn Robinson the coach of the year.

Texas-Tyler has chosen not to renew the contract of head women's basketball coach and associate athletic director Terri Deike.

"We thank coach Deike for her dedication and service to UT-Tyler, the athletics department, and the women's basketball program," said athletic director James Vilade. "Coach Deike played a major role in helping UT-Tyler move toward NCAA membership and she was involved in many other facets of the athletics department."

Deike was Texas-Tyler's first women's basketball coach and had a 90-61 record over six seasons. Her teams won three ASC East Division Championship and appeared in the American Southwest Conference tournament twice.

Assistant coach Cassi Little will assume the women's basketball coaching duties on an interim basis and a national search for a new head coach will begin immediately. Deike will continue in her role as associate athletics director until Aug. 31.

"After an exhaustive search we believe we have hired a coach who is committed to the process of rebuilding a women's basketball program that has been searching for stability over the past several years," Hunter said. "Bill has demonstrated over the course of his career and the interview process that he truly wants to coach and mentor young adults in a Christian environment and has a proven track record of stability in his coaching roles throughout his career. We are blessed to have someone of Bill's experience joining our athletic staff."
Adamson takes over a team that went 2-20 last season, 2-0 against North Central (Minn.) and 0-20 against everyone else. The Storm haven't won a UMAC game since beating Northland 48-42 on Feb. 11, 2006, a streak of

Sachs replaces Mike Summey, who went 17-12 in one season before stepping down in early June to become the director of basketball operations at Miami (Fla.). "Andy's extensive experience with winning programs, along with his familiarity with our primary recruiting areas, makes him an ideal fit to lead our men's basketball program," said Weaver. "He has worked with some great coaches in his career and has enjoyed success wherever he's been.
UW-Platteville conducted an extensive national search for its 13th men's basketball coach, but as it turned out, the ideal candidate was already on the Pioneer bench.

Jeff Gard was introduced as the head coach Tuesday in front of a large gathering in the Pioneer Student Center. He moves to the head coaching position after serving as a Pioneer assistant for the previous six seasons. He spent the last two as the associate head coach under Paul Combs, who left for Division II Wayne State (Neb.).

"We had a really good pool of candidates, and Jeff rose to the top," UW-Platteville athletic director Mark Molesworth said. "His tireless hard work and efforts over the last six years have helped the Pioneers return to the NCAA III playoffs. We're very confident he can continue that as a head coach. He truly is a member of the Pioneer family, as he has his undergraduate and

Frostburg will become an official member of the league on July 1, 2010, and start athletic competition that fall.
The school, which is 150 miles from Washington in the Maryland panhandle, has been talked about as a potential CAC member since the mid-1990s. The Bobcats currently compete as the southernmost member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

Alma women's basketball coach Charlie Goffnett, who led the Scots to a national championship in 1992, announced that he will retire from that post.

Goffnett coached the Scots for 22 seasons during which he compiled a 334-217 record. Goffnett leaves as the MIAA's winningest women's basketball coach. His 334 wins put him in front of current Hope coach Brian Morehouse (315 wins).

The Scots reached the NCAA tournament five times under Goffnett's leadership including the 1992 title run in which they won five games on the road. Alma defeated Moravian 79-75 to capture the school's first national championship. Alma's last trip to the NCAA tournament was 1997.
"Although I enjoyed all of our successes, the fact that our basketball program won the school's first-ever National Championship is truly something that I hold dear to my heart," said Goffnett in the school's release. "Each of the coaches here

It says something when traveling to the two-time defending national champion isn't the most interesting game on the schedule. But for Augustana, heading to Wash U takes a back seat to the game that precedes it: a Dec. 9 date at Gonzaga.

Grey Giovanine's Vikings return just one starter from last year's 18-8 team, so the timing might not be the best. But this kind of opportunity doesn't present itself every year. "For our team to get a chance to compete against one of college basketball's best programs in arguably the toughest home court environment in the nation, is a remarkable opportunity," said Giovanine, who is 183-79 (.698) in 10 seasons at Augustana.

After turning Manhattanville into a conference contender in just three seasons, Candice Brown has left for another challenge: rebuilding Vassar.

Brown led the Valiants to an 18-11 record and an appearance in the MAC-Freedom Conference title game last season. The 18 wins were the program's most since 1983-1984 and helped earn Brown conference coach of the year honors. Brown put together consecutive winning seasons at Manhattanville in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 after taking over a program that was 7-18 the year before she arrived. She finished with a record of 38-42 in three years with the Valiants.

Now she'll try to achieve the same turnaround at Vassar, which was 4-21 last season. The Brewers are 28-91 over the last five seasons with just seven conference victories during that stretch. Vassar had no seniors and just one junior last season but expects to return two All-Liberty League selections, in

Southern Maine has announced that former women's basketball coach Gary Fifield will return to the sidelines next season, reassuming the reins of a program he guided for 21 years before retiring from coaching last fall.

Fifield returns to the program he guided to a 541-86 record over 21 seasons after interim coach Mike McDevitt resigned to return to his alma mater, St. Joseph's (Maine), as women's basketball coach. In one season as the Huskies coach, McDevitt led the team to a 22-7 overall record, the Little East Conference tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.
Adam Stockwell will be the next head coach for Oswego State after spending five seasons at Clarkson. Stockwell replaces Kevin Broderick who left Oswego State for his alma mater Nazareth who replaced retiring head coach Mike Daly. So now it is Clarkson's turn to search for a new coach.
Stockton becomes the 15th head coach in the 86-year history of Oswego State after guiding Clarkson into postseason play in each of the past three seasons, including the Liberty League tournament title and the program's first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2008.
