D3hoops.com: Champion's coach goes to Division II job

Howard Payne women's basketball coach Chris Kielsmeier announced today that he will be leaving Howard Payne to take the head women's basketball coaching position at Division II Wayne State in Wayne, Neb.

After leading the Lady Jackets to the Division III national championship, a perfect season at 33-0, and five consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins Chris Kielsmeier looks to face a new challenge at Wayne State. Kielsmeier will take over a Wayne State program that went 22-10 last season and reached the NCAA Division II regional semifinals. Howard Payne will conduct a national search for his replacement.

"It was a decision to get closer to home and to take another step my in professional career," Kielsmeier, an Iowa native, said. "It wasn't an easy decision in any way. It still isn't and it won't be for some time. You go to college and after that, to me, you're just always trying to push yourself in your professional career. For nine years I did that here. I feel it's the next step in my career, but the biggest thing is its closer to home. It's four hours from my house, where my family lives."

Kielsmeier finished his eighth year as head coach at Howard Payne as the winningest women's basketball coach in HPU history, with a record of 179-44.

D3hoops.com: First-timers, again

Last year it was Amherst and DePauw bringing home Walnut and Bronze on their first trip to the Division III basketball championship game. This year, it was Wash U and Howard Payne.

For each program, however, the firsts extend beyond the basketball title. For Wash U, it was the first national championship in any men's sport, while Howard Payne won the first national title in the history of the American Southwest Conference.

Wash U rode an incredible weekend from Troy Ruths to the title, including a 90-68 win against Amherst in the national championship game. More men's coverage includes our title game photo gallery and final bracket.

Howard Payne rolled twice in Holland, including a 68-54 win against Messiah for the title. More women's coverage includes our title game photo gallery and final bracket.

Ruths and Howard Payne's Meia Daniels were named the D3hoops.com Players of the Year. We spoke to both on our final Hoopsville broadcast of the season.

Division III basketball recently made news outside of Division III: The movement to form a Division IV was dealt a huge blow when the NCAA discontinued the attempt, citing survey responses from Division III schools that reflected an overwhelming lack of interest. And when Winona State won the Division II men's basketball title, it was a feather in Division III's cap as well. Winona lost just one game all season, to Division III St. Thomas.

Defiance has hired Kyle Brumett as its new head coach for the men's basketball program. Brumett is set to begin his post with the Yellow Jackets on May 19.

"I am absolutely elated that Coach Brumett has accepted the Yellow Jacket position," athletic director Dick Kaiser stated. "I believe his personality and his basic coaching philosophies are a great match for the players that are currently in the DC program.

"Coach Brumett comes from a blue collar background and knows what hard work is all about. I know he is going to roll up his sleeves and get after it the minute he walks on the DC campus. There is no doubt in my mind that he will have success at Defiance College. Fortunately for us, I believe that we have caught another rising star that will make a solid impact on the men's basketball program, the college and the community as

Kelly Mahlum, head coach of the Colorado College women's basketball team since September 2001, has resigned her position, director of athletics Ken Ralph announced. A national search for her replacement will begin immediately.

"While we all are sad to see Kelly go, we fully respect her desire to seek new challenges in her life," Ralph said. "Coach Mahlum is an excellent coach and teacher of the game of basketball. Colorado College was fortunate to have her services for so long."

In seven seasons at the helm, Mahlum guided the Tigers to a 64-106 overall record, the best for a head coach since Beth Branson compiled a 24-43 mark from 1985 through 1988.

In 2007-08, Mahlum led CC into league play as a new member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. In their inaugural year in the competitive SCAC, the Tigers went 8-6, finished second in the Western Division and made the semifinals

WPI men's basketball coach Chris Bartley received the Denise Nicoletti Trustees' Award for Service to Community during the university's annual Honors Convocation. The awards honored five WPI faculty members, a staff member, and a graduate student for outstanding research, teaching, advising, and contributions to the community.

Established in 2003 in memory of WPI's first tenured female faculty member in electrical and computer engineering, it is presented to a member of the faculty or staff in recognition of passion and action in serving the needs of a community. Bartley's remarkable success as a coach is exceeded only by the impact he has had on the community as a board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass/Metrowest and a mentor to WPI students. His example has inspired 100 students (the men's and women's basketball teams; four fraternities and sororities) to become Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Commissioner Amy Frankenstein-Friedman announced that the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PnAC) will be changing its name to the Colonial States Athletic Conference effective July 1, 2008.

With the new name comes a massive rebranding effort that aims to change the identity of the conference.

"This is an exciting time for the conference," Frankenstein-Friedman said. "The new name recognizes that we have member schools that are not in Pennsylvania. And, after years of being confused with other conferences that are similarly named, we will be able to create a new identity and really stand out from the crowd."

The conference was the second PAC in Division III, following the Presidents' Athletic Conference, which has a longer history.

The PnAC's Marketing and Re-branding Committee, composed of administrators and student-athletes from member institutions, conducted two surveys to obtain feedback on what features were important in a conference name. More than 1,200 visitors looked at the surveys, and more

Bowdoin women's basketball coach Stefanie Pemper has accepted the position of head women's coach at the Naval Academy.

In her 10 seasons at Bowdoin, Stefanie Pemper established the Polar Bears as one of the premier Division III programs in the nation, accumulating a record of 235-48 (.830). The most successful coach in Bowdoin women's basketball history, Pemper led the squad to NCAA bids in nine of her 10 seasons, including an incredible six-year stretch from 2002-07.

The Polar Bears reached the Elite Eight each of those seasons, posting a mark of 164-14 (.921) and playing before some of the largest crowds in Division III basketball. They won the NESCAC championship in each of those campaigns and reached the NCAA championship game in 2004.

Jay Murphy, the longtime head men's basketball coach at Alfred, will soon begin a new chapter in his coaching career when he takes over the reins of the school's women's team.

Murphy has been appointed head coach of the Lady Saxons, effective May 31. He will replace Heidi Metzer, who resigned earlier this month after three seasons as Alfred's head women's basketball coach.

The school will soon begin a nationwide search for Murphy's successor, said James Moretti, AU athletic director. He said the decision to appoint Murphy coach of the women's team was an easy one.

For Plattsburgh State guard Anthony Williams, the Collegiate Basketball Invitational was a chance to show what he could do against scholarship players. And Saturday night's All-Star game was a chance to be on national television.

"I'm happy because people back home at Plattsburgh were watching me on ESPNU tonight, showing support," Williams said. "That's what I was thinking about in the game. I've got to represent them."

Williams, who scored 16 points in 17 minutes, and Wooster guard James Cooper each played for the winning East squad -- appropriate for Division III which is almost entirely east of the Mississippi -- and helped the team to a 107-85 win.

For Cooper, it was a halftime conversation with Wooster coach Steve Moore which helped turn his evening around. What did he have to say, and how did the rest of the Division III participants perform this weekend? Matt Florjancic talked to both Williams

WADSWORTH, Ohio -- Matthew Broderick's character in the Civil War drama Glory made an inspirational comment to his troops before the final battle in the movie. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw addressed his regiment on the beach before entering Fort Wagner.

After looking at the flag bearer, Shaw asks those in his command "If this man shall fall, who will lift the flag and carry on?"

While the forwards and centers showed their skills in Day Two of the Collegiate Basketball Invitational, it was a record-setting performance by Plattsburgh State guard Anthony Williams and consistent play from fellow Division III All-American James Cooper that carried the Division III flag into the national spotlight.

Williams scored 34 points in a 125-99 Renacci-Doraty Chevrolet victory over MBM Logistechs. Williams' mark beat the old record of 30 held by Eddie Smith of Illinois-Springfield.

WADSWORTH, Ohio -- At the beginning of the week, if someone would have said a 2007 Final Four rematch of sorts would take place and a last-minute alternate would get the call to participate in the second-annual Collegiate Basketball Invitational, the response may have been, "You're crazy."

On the first day of the Collegiate Basketball Invitational, an event where NCAA Division II, III and NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) men's basketball players get a chance to play in front of professional scouts, James Cooper from Wooster and Amherst's Andrew Olson met once again on the hardwood.

Instead of playing for a national championship berth, the two D3hoops.com First Team All-American guards were opponents in this three-day festival of basketball. Cooper won the battle, but his team lost the game. Olson's MBM Logistechs Team (1-1) defeated Cooper and Team Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital (0-2) 96-87.

The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU at 8 p.m. ET.

Cooper and Williams will play for the East squad. Williams averaged 19.3 points in his three games, tied for third-best in the CBI, shooting 6-for-9 from three-point range. Cooper averaged 16.7 points and was 9-for-15 from beyond the arc.

Division III basketball got an eighth participant into the Collegiate Basketball Invitational, and Nick Harrington made the most of it. WADSWORTH, Ohio -- With Day Two action from the second-annual Collegiate Basketball Invitational underway, the focus for the eight Division III prospects turned from learning to play against different competition to showcasing the talent and heart small-school players bring to the court.

Hardin-Simmons center Mardochee Jean proved in his first game Thursday how important Division III players are in the world of competitive basketball. Jean scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds en route to his Louis Perry and Associates Team collecting a 95-78 victory over MBM Logistechs.

The Thursday win gave Jean's team a bye into the semifinals of the tournament, which began play Friday morning. Though his scoring numbers came down against the City of Wadsworth Team, Jean still made his presence known, hauling in nine rebounds, blocking one shot and handing out three assists in the 106-95 Louis Perry and Associates victory.

More than four-fifths of current Division III members supports or strongly supported the current Division III structure, according to survey results released by the NCAA on Wednesday.

The survey, which 96 percent of Division III schools responded to, overwhelmingly rejected the idea floated by some of creating a Division IV, or subdividing Division III into a III-A and III-AA. Only eight percent of respondents supported the subdivisions, and nine percent the addition of a new division. In total, 65 schools indicated support or strong support for a change in Division III's structure.

Of those that expressed a desire to maintain the current structure, about half gave reasons, according to the NCAA's survey summary. The most common reasons included the negative impacts, such as breaking up of conferences, the loss of traditional rivalries, and difficulties attracting student-athletes to a Division IV school.

Division III members have made changes in recent years as the division
