A super Sunday

Sure, there was a big game in another sport on Sunday. But there were plenty of big games before that in Division III basketball this afternoon.

Elizabethtown notched an important win in conference over Albright 74-67. The Blue Jays used a 14 to two run midway through the second half to take the lead and then made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Keith Fogel scored 18 points and was 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the victory. Albright's loss coupled with Lycoming's narrow 69-68 win over Arcadia forges a tie between those two atop the MAC Commonwealth standings.

No. 21 Wooster is unbeaten, but not untested, in the NCAC after today's win at Wabash 64-61. Ian Franks' driving layup with 30 seconds left gave the Scots a two-point lead. The Little Giants missed a couple potential game tying shots and the Scots emerged with the victory. Mount Aloysius upended No. 22 Medaille 65-64 when the Mavericks only scored one point in the final 90 seconds of a close game. Sunday's men's scores.

In women's action, Widener ended No. 21 Lebanon Valley's undefeated run in the MAC Commonwealth Conference. The Pride upset the Flying Dutchmen by outscoring them 42-26 in the second half. Chicago held off No. 24 Rochester 73-64 and kept pace with No. 3 Washington U. in the UAA chase. The Bears handled Emory 61-47. Sunday's women's scores.

With snow blanketing much of the country, many of Saturday's games have been rescheduled for tomorrow or Monday. But the weather couldn't cool off a couple of teams who remain hot in the final weeks of the regular season.
It was another day and another big win for No. 1 Amherst

Williams ended the first half on a 30-12 run and the showdown for first place in the NESCAC became a rout as the No. 2 Ephs ran away from No. 25 Colby, 82-58.

The only team in Division III men's basketball with an unbeaten regional record, Williams improved to 20-1 overall. Colby and Middlebury are tied for second in the NESCAC. Friday's men's scores.

In women's action, No. 1 Amherst survived to win at Bates 72-66 as Shannon Finucane had a program-record 10 steals
to go with 13 points and eight rebounds. No. 6 Washington U. avenged last week's loss at Rochester with a vengeance, rolling over the No. 24 Yellowjackets 68-40. Friday's women's scores.

No. 5 George Fox finished on a 9-3 run to beat Whitman 50-46. No. 10 Tufts finished the game on a 19-9 run as the Jumbos prepared for tomorrow's game against top-ranked Amherst by pulling away from Trinity

D3H: Hope shuts down Calvin

No. 4 Hope shut down No. 9 Calvin and notched another win over its archrival 61-50 on Wednesday night. The Knights took a 50-49 lead on a Carissa Verkaik jumper with 5:35 remaining but the Flying Dutch held them scoreless the rest of the way. Hope has won its past seven games against Calvin.

Perhaps even bigger than the result was the return to significant minutes for Hope's Preseason All-American Carrie Snikkers. She has battled injuries this year and played limited minutes in the two previous games but tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes tonight. More women's scores.

On the men's side, Guilford made an exciting debut as the new No. 1 -- probably more exciting than it had hoped. The Quakers defeated visiting Hampden-Sydney 76-74 to stay atop the ODAC.
William Paterson is off to a 21-1 start. Both sets of Pioneers are, in fact, the men and the women.

For Jose Rebimbas' Pioneers, it's a 19-game winning streak, since a Nov. 21 loss to Oneonta State. For Erin Monahan's Pioneers, it's a little different, after a 102-66 loss to conference rival Kean. But both are near locks to make the NCAA Tournament, barring complete collapses down the stretch.

Last season, St. Norbert went into its first game of February against Lawrence at home at 16-1, riding high. Only thing is, it didn't last. The Green Knights lost at home to the Vikings, then dropped five of their last seven and missed the NCAA Tournament entirely, while Lawrence advanced.

This year, it was the same story, but with a different ending as No. 9 St. Norbert jumped out to a 27-9 lead and cruised to a 66-48 win against Lawrence behind 16 points from Chris Peterson and 10 from Dave Wipperfurth. The Green Knights improved to 17-1. Tuesday's men's scores.
&&f-boxl&&No. 25 Colby survived its first game as a D3hoops.com Top 25 team, winning at 2-18 Southern Maine 74-60, while No. 20 St. Mary's (Md.) got 34 points from Camontae Griffin, six in overtime in a 91-82 win at Christopher Newport.
D3H: Guilford, Amherst take top spots

Following this weekend's results, there are two new teams atop the men's and women's D3hoops.com Top 25 polls.

For the first time ever, Guilford sits atop the men's poll by virtue of its run through the ODAC and UW-Stevens Point's loss to UW-Whitewater last Wednesday. The Quakers are 18-1 with their lone loss coming at No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan in early December. They received 24 of 25 first place votes with two-time defending champion and currently third ranked Washington U. receiving the other. Williams sits between Guilford and Washington U. as the new No. 2. UW-Stevens Point checks in at No. 4.

Similarly, Amherst sits atop the women's poll for the first time in program history. The Lord Jeffs, who are 19-0 following a string of impressive road wins in conference, took over the top spot following Illinois Wesleyan's loss Carthage on Saturday. Amherst

Two years ago, Piedmont ran the table in the Great South Athletic Conference, went 24-3 and made the NCAA Tournament. The team has struggled to return to those heights since, but has been putting it together over the past three games, including snapping a 20-game conference winning streak by Maryville (Tenn.) on Sunday.

Since athletic director John Dzik, who won 483 games as men's basketball coach at Cabrini before being fired, took over as Piedmont's women's coach midseason, they've won three in a row. Sunday's women's scores.

Rochester knocked off its second Top 25 women's team of the weekend, defeating Chicago 54-52 in overtime after beating Wash U on Friday. Melissa Alwardt tied the game with three free throws late in regulation, then made the deciding basket in overtime as the Yellowjackets improved to 15-3. Now all Rochester must do is face the same two teams next weekend, on the road.

A lot of games in the top half of the South Region got postponed on Saturday, but one that was played could be the icing on this week's Top 25 cake.

That game was played in Ashland, Va., where No. 2 Guilford defeated No. 9-and-falling Randolph-Macon 82-73 behind a double-double from Tyler Sanborn, with 26 points and 13 rebounds. The win improved Guilford to 18-1 and was the 14th consecutive victory for the Quakers since a Dec. 5 loss at Virginia Wesleyan. Check out Saturday's men's scores.

Guilford won't have as much competition for No. 1 votes, not after No. 5 UW-Whitewater laid a disastrous egg, losing 95-77 at home to UW-Stout, which improved to 10-9, 5-6 in the WIAC. Whitewater had been in line to move up after winning at top-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday night.

Three weeks ago, Illinois Wesleyan crushed Carthage 76-48 at IWU's Shirk Center, leading wire to wire, putting the game away with a 14-3 run to end the first half and going up by as many as 33.

But back at home on Saturday, No. 20 Carthage turned the tables, knocking off the top-ranked Titans 72-67. Diana Jacklin scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lady Reds, who improved to 16-3. Saturday's women's scores. For men's coverage, scroll down.

The ranked men's and women's teams from Amherst and Washington U. went on the road on Friday night with mixed results.

For Amherst, the the women won at Bowdoin 72-63 for the first time ever. Caroline Stedman scored 21 points for the No. 2 Lord Jeffs who shot 50 percent from three (10-for-20) and improved to 18-0. On the men's side, No. 18 Amherst lost a heartbreaker when Mark Phillips scored off a rebound with two seconds left, lifting Bowdoin to a 69-68 victory.

Washington U. traveled to Rochester for a double-header and had the opposite result. First the Rochester women upset No. 3 Washington U. 63-51. It was the Bears' first loss in the UAA and the Yellowjackets tenth win in 11 games. But the Bears' men's team pulled away from Rochester 82-78 thanks to a big night from Sean Wallis and a big second half

Their winning streak ended fairly early in the season, but if you wrote off the defending women's champion because they lost their top senior and the D3hoops.com Rookie of the Year, you may have been premature.

In fact, the Bruins are doing alright for themselves, to the tune of 16-2, 9-0 in the Northwest Conference, with one of the losses to a Division II school. Part of that success is due to the newest member of the George Fox starting lineup: freshman Hannah Munger. And more of it is because the rotation goes 11 players deep.

No. 5 UW-Whitewater rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit to win at No. 1 UW-Stevens Point, sweeping the season series with a 61-58 victory.

The Pointers jumped on the Warhawks early, scoring the first seven points of the game and taking a 36-21 lead into the break. But the Warhawks outscored the Pointers 32-5 to start the second half. The Pointers rallied and took the lead briefly on two Ross Foreman free throws before Fletcher Dupree edged his shot over the rim with 18 seconds left to give the Warhawks the lead for good. Phil Negri led UW-Whitewater with 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half.

No. 9 Randolph-Macon continues to struggle in conference play where it lost to Washington and Lee 65-57. The Yellow Jackets shot 1-for-23 from three-point land and have lost three of their last five. The schedule doesn't get any easier with No. 2 Guilford

Much of the selection process for the NCAA Tournament in Division III basketball comes down to numbers. And when the regulars on our forum start tossing around acronyms such as OWP, OOWP, AQ and the like, it's easy for someone who's new to the playoff picture to get just a bit lost.

&&f-boxr&&But never fear. We'll try to make the process a little more transparent for you. Every year we project who will make the NCAA Tournament on the final night of the season, and because the process is so numbers-driven, we're able to get all but one or two teams right on an annual basis, even though we aren't privy to any inside knowledge or insight.

As often as we can, we do the same number-crunching the NCAA does, to determine what each team's strength of schedule numbers are. This season the NCAA has made public what was already a common

There aren't any unbeaten men's basketball teams remaining in Division III. And after Saturday, there aren't any men's teams that are undefeated against Division III competition, as No. 7 Eastern Mennonite and No. 8 MIT took losses to Bridgewater (Va.) and Wheaton (Mass.).
D3H: Headed for D-III, New Orleans pulls out of Sun Belt

The Sun Belt Conference announced today that the University of New Orleans has voluntarily withdrawn its Sun Belt Conference membership effective July 1, 2010 and additionally that the conference, with support from the league's university presidents, voted to relieve the school from the associated fees of early withdrawal.

UNO was authorized by the Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors on Dec. 1, 2009, to withdraw from the Sun Belt Conference by July 1, 2010, and to develop a process for a transition to NCAA Division III. UNO previously announced plans to investigate a move to Division III on Nov. 11.

"It is unfortunate that UNO finds itself in financial constraints that have necessitated such drastic measures, but there is a time when tough decisions must be made. While we are proud of our past membership in the Sun Belt Conference, the university has to make changes that will

The Flying Dutchmen (15-1, 6-0 in the MAC Commonwealth) held the Falcons (14-2, 5-1) to 19 points in the first half and a season low 26.4 percent field goal percentage in the game. Julie Henninger and Dori Gyori, who averaged a combined 25 points per game for Messiah coming in, scored just 10 against Lebanon Valley. Meanwhile Eryn Shultz scored 13 points and broke the Flying Dutchmen program record for career three pointers. Lebanon Valley had not beaten Messiah since the 2001-02 season and had never beaten a Top 10 opponent. More women's scores. For men's coverage, scroll down.

Several ranked teams stayed hot and won big games on the road on Wednesday night. No. 1 UW-Stevens Point used an 11-0 run sandwiched around halftime to defeat UW-Eau Claire, 74-68. All five starters reached double figures for the Pointers. No. 11 Anderson turned a one-point deficit into a two-point victory in the closing moments of its game at Manchester, 77-75. Andrew Bowman's layup gave the Ravens a 76-75 lead with 14 seconds left and Manchester missed a jumper with three seconds left.

No. 21 William Paterson extended its win streak to 15 by beating nearby rival Montclair State 54-43. No. 16 St. Mary's (Md.) took over first in the CAC with a win at Hood, 65-54. More Wednesday's men's scores.

Not all ranked teams kept their winning streak intact, however. Andrew Jahns' putback with one second left gave host Wheaton (Ill.) a dramatic 66-65 win over No. 17 Illinois Wesleyan.

Around the Nation
To the outside observer, Eastern Mennonite University has burst from out of nowhere to take the Old Dominion Athletic Conference by storm and claim a spot in the Top 10 of the D3hoops.com Top 25.

To the insider, though, it's a natural outcome -- albeit a surprising one -- of starting four freshmen two years ago. Todd Phillips, George Johnson, D.J. Hinson and Orie Pancione got their baptism by fire and now, as juniors, have the Runnin Royals off to a 14-1 start, and unbeaten against Division III teams. Evans Clinchy has more about Eastern Mennonite in this week's Around the Nation.

The Royals, and the other three teams from the ODAC who are in the Top 12, aren't the only ones turning heads. Those who have followed Division III basketball closely over the past year or two may have already heard of the other focus of this week's column:

For the first time in nearly three years, but the 21st time overall, UW-Stevens Point is the No. 1 team in the D3hoops.com men's basketball Top 25. And for the 11th time, it was a unanimous selection.

The Pointers, who won the 2004 and 2005 national championship, were also No. 1 for a seven-week stretch in the 2006-07 season before losing in the Sweet 16 to Washington University. The full D3hoops.com Top 25.

The Pointers move up from the No. 2 spot. Former No. 1 Randolph-Macon falls to third overall, behind fellow ODAC member Guilford. Eastern Mennonite, which knocked Randolph-Macon from the top spot, joins the other two ODAC teams in the top 10, at No. 7.

Illinois Wesleyan remains No. 1 in the D3hoops.com women's basketball Top 25, with 20 first-place votes. Amherst received four votes again, with the other going to Kean.

&&f-boxr&&Babson freshman Alex Rudolph drained a three-pointer from the right wing as time expired to lift the Beavers to a dramatic 63-60 victory over visiting Bowdoin, while No. 5 Williams survived a buzzer-beater attempt at New Paltz State as a Nick Taldi three-pointer rimmed out in some of the highlights of a brief night of action Tuesday night. No. 18 Whitworth roared out to a 50-15 lead and cruised past Whitman 110-83.

Boiling down Division III into a few bullet points isn't easy, and it hasn't gotten easier as the division has grown. But Division III has been attempting to define itself in a way that can be easily communicated to those on the outside. After a Division II identity statement process ended up with the fairly meaningless "I chose Division II" mantra and D-II wrapped itself in a lot of the things Division III holds dear, it became important to take control of the message.

To us here at D3sports.com, Division III is the highest form of purely amateur athletics in the U.S. It's where students -- note, not "student-athletes" -- play for love of the game. Division III competitors get no special treatment, no scholarships, no special privileges, no separate dining halls, no dorms to themselves. They don't get preferred treatment from their professors; in fact, it's far more likely they

UW-Eau Claire led from tip to finish against UW-Whitewater and the Blugolds sent the No. 4 Warhawks to defeat, 80-67. Amadou Fofana and Geoff Probst led the charge early for UW-Eau Claire, whose lead hovered at or above 10 points for much of the first half. Dustin Mitchell scored five straight points to pull the Warhawks within two but the Blugolds answered with a 13-5 run to pull away. The Warhawks are the fourth team ranked in the Top 5 to lose this week.

The one that didn't lose? No. 2 UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers got all they could handle at UW-Superior but pulled out the 56-53 victory. No. 6 Guilford avenged its only loss of the season by beating No. 8 Virginia Wesleyan 71-56 at home. Tyler Sanborn posted a double-double (21 points, 15 rebounds) for the 10th consecutive game and Quakers improved to 14-1, 5-1 ODAC. Saturday's men's scores.

Mary Washington stymied No. 5 Marymount in the first half and held on through the second to give Saints their first loss of the season, 65-57. The Eagles scored the first 20 points of the game while holding the Saints to only four first-half field goals and no points until midway through the first half. The Saints' offense improved in the second half but they could get no closer than six. The Eagles improved to 11-3 and 6-0 in the CAC and Marymount slips to 15-1 and 6-1 in conference.
