And now we have six – Day 3 D-III Championship

2009

Yesterday we started out with two good games and then the blowouts came in the winners bracket.

The Carthage-Trinity was the best game of the day. Carthage head coach, Augie Schmidt said that “it was the toughest 10-1 win he ever had.” The second elimination game had Chapman take a business like approach in sending Farmingdale State home.

Wooster and St. Thomas had the same playbook. Keep putting runs on the board and keep the other team off balance. These two offenses are on a collision course and we will see who emerges out of the winners bracket.

Three good games on tap for today with lots of sunshine. The wind is blowing in so any ball in the outfield will be help up. Kean gets Chapman in the early game with Carthage and Shenandoah fighting to remain one more day. Wooster will have their number three pitcher going against a pitcher TDB for the Tommies. St. Thomas Dennis Denning sent out his number four yesterday and has a host of arms to select from from.

With this years bracket, the winner of game 11 does not get a bye but win or lose, they will have already have secured a date in the Championship round.

  1. Pat Coleman Says:

This seems to be the series of the obstruction call. Was that a point of emphasis this year?

Change to the posted starting lineup as Gabe Ramirez replaced Kyle Walker, who got hurt during pregame warmups.

Wind blowing in here today for the first time this weekend.

  2. dixon Says:

Chapman will be running today. Bartlinski has a lower back strain which must be preventing him from pitching in the stretch position. The leads that the Panthers are taking are bigger than normal. Now that I think about it I don’t know if Bartlinski has been throwing to first to keep the players close to the bag. Either way a single turns into a double.

Semel has three hits and Hadzinsky has two hits today. They are making a bid for the all-tournament team. Kean’s Zavistoski is flashing the leather in his bid for all tournament honors.

  3. dixon Says:

Just as I write, Bartlinski makes a couple of good throws to first. His back is not bothering him on those throws

  4. Ralph Turner Says:

I wish that we had instant replay on the Hadzinski attempted DP 4-2 to get the runner on the appeal at 3B in the bottom of the 5th..

  5. baseballstud01 Says:

the commentary guys are saying Aich is the closer and they put him in with still a few innings left, but when you look at his stats, he is a closer, but he also threw 1 complete game, the last time Kean and Chapman played and he also got the Win.

  6. Spence Says:

I’ve wished for replay on the broadcast several times this weekend.

Right now I’m just wishing the stream was stable.

  7. Spence Says:

How long until Semel goes to the mound for Chapman?

  8. baseballstud01 Says:

Also the commentary guys should know, that was not Walker, that was Gabe Ramirez who just got that hit

  9. Ralph Turner Says:

Why was Semel playing so shallow in LF on the double by Zavitowski that opened the 7th?

Levitt has been relieved by John Semel as the closer.

So we have our relievers’ duel, Semel vs Aich.

  10. Spence Says:

Did Semel get to warm up last inning?

  11. Spence Says:

Ralph, maybe because Z is the 9 hole and they didn’t respect him enough? Just a guess.

  12. Ralph Turner Says:

Posted on the message boards as well…

I don’t know if anyone has remarked about this, but the major highway in the background of the videocast is US Hwy 41 of Allman Brothers Band fame.

  13. Pat Coleman Says:

Can’t believe the TV guys never picked up on Ramirez vs. Walker. I just passed them the info.

  14. dixon Says:

Kean is done for the season but the future looks good. Five, six freshmen playing with some new pitching coming in next year could see the Kean dynasty continuing.

Mike Moceri finishes his college career and says about his head coach, “Neil is a great coach and gets us ready to go.” Moceri cold offer no more with the emotion of a great season and career coming to an end.

Mike Diaz picked up the theme. “They [the coaching staff] does a fantastic job. I came here from another school and you can see why this is a winning program.”

Mike is a junior and the Cougars will need his leadership to make it a return trip in 2010.

  15. Spence Says:

Kean had the offense, just apparently didn’t have a healthy ace. The HR by Prechtl was the kill shot…doused the momentum I feel.

If they can find some pitching, 2011 could be their year. Find it tough to believe they can replace all the pitching they lose in just one year.

Chapman’s showing a better offense than i thought they had.

  16. Spence Says:

Pat (or whoever, I just imagine Pat’s probably the most likely to be interested)…

Can you give some insight on the attendance figures? Are they counting people who bought a tournament pass as an attendee for each and every game?

Was weird to me that the lowest attendance recorded on the box score yesterday was the Carthage game, and that Kean-Chapman showed an attendance of 1000+.

Was talking to a D-II SID friend of mine about how it doesn’t look like anyone is at the D-II tournament.

  17. dixon Says:

    Game 9 quotes:

Ioverio on the Kean runner leaving early”

My initial reaction was to find out if he knew the ball was touched and knocked back in the air again. The explanation I got was when the ball was initially touched, Michael was heading toward the plate and then on his way back.

One thing I know is he went back to touch the base, so when he went back to touch the base. I probably asked the wrong questions, but if he went early and he was down the line,

His answer was he didn’t have him going back at all. In hindsight I guess I could’ve protested. I don’t know what that would have accomplished.

Carlos [Guzman, the 3B umpire] is a good man, he’s from our region, he’s well respected. There’s not much you can do to change it.

    SS Mike Diaz added:
My first reaction off the bat was I kind of froze but I definitely went back to tag. I guess the umpire missed the call. It was definitely a tough call in a big spot.

    Ioverio on steals:

“I don’t allow them [our pitchers] to be super quick to the plate,” Ioverio said, “but at the same time you can still be effective by varying the looks and the holds and the timings throughout the course of the game.”

You’re at a deficit either way. If you make guys rush to the plate and you get quick with your feet on the mound you risk … affecting the pitcher’s delivery too much and takes something off him while he’s out there.

Keep the guys off the bases, that’s the best way to stop the running game. Once they’re on base there are 15 ways to do that. It just allowed them to get comfortable.

I don’t allow them to be super quick to the plate but at the same time you can still be effective by varying the looks and the holds and the timings
throughout the course of the game.

  18. Pat Coleman Says:

    Spence,

I can ask around but my suspicion is that the attendance number on each box score is a measure of the tickets sold for that session at that point in time. So if it grows throughout the day, that would make sense. But I’ll ask.

For what it’s worth, the most fans I’ve seen in the stands this week is right now. Good crowd here.

  19. Spence Says:

Makes sense, with Carthage involved in a Saturday game.

  20. Spence Says:

By the way, in case anyone there cares, video feed appears to be completamente down.

  21. Spence Says:

Ralph, what I meant to say yesterday is that Kean and Shenandoah have no chance to get through the loser’s bracket :)

Both of them hit the ball and played tough. Carthage and Chapman showed more offense than I thought they had, particularly Chapman going against a pretty decent couple of pitchers.

  22. Pat Coleman Says:

Yes, and Shenandoah showed up well too, in terms of fan base.

  23. Spence Says:

That’s good to hear about Shenandoah. How many would you figure they had?

  24. Spence Says:

McDowell on for Wooster. This makes it official; they’re punting Monday.

  25. Spence Says:

This is a great committee meeting I’m watching. CSPAN’s got nothing on this.

  26. Spence Says:

Sean Karpen should have been first team All-American. Best all-around player Wooster’s had since…well I don’t know how to finish that sentence.

  27. mideastfan Says:

I’ll finish it for you….Trevor Urban.

and the last time Wooster played for the title, they were led by Urban in 97.

  28. Spence Says:

Urban was the one that came to mind, but couldn’t remember what kind of defensive player he was.

  29. mideastfan Says:

was a stud CF, fast as anyone we ever played…..then they moved him to SS his senior year in 98 and he was decent….but a GREAT CF.

  30. mideastfan Says:

^^^ sorry, his senior year was 1999.

  31. Spence Says:

Thanks. I think my brain knew Urban was good but my fingers weren’t sure. Something like that.

I always remember that 97 Wooster team because one of my HS classmates that grew up on Harmar Hill was a starting pitcher for them. Maybe the only time I’ve ever been a little happy to see someone from Wooster win, and certainly the only time at PP/SS.

  32. Pat Coleman Says:

Pettorini said Trapuzzano is starting tomorrow and Shane Swearingen is getting the day off.

And I confirmed that the attendance is determined as was postulated earlier.

  33. dixon Says:

Wooster starts Trapuzzano tomorrow. McDowell for Tuesday. Miller in the bullpen to close or get second game.

Denning said that Karpen and Semel were the two best players at the tournament.

  34. Spence Says:

    Not unexpected for Wooster pitching-wise.

Trapuzzano hasn’t made an effective start in the month of May and has a torn labrum. Lately he’s gone about 3 innings of marginally effective baseball and then gotten rescued. Tomorrow that would be Fugate/Hall/Gemberling-Johnson rather than Degrand/McDowell/Miller.

27.3 innings since last Thursday now for McDowell. And he threw at least 9 2/3 innings in two separate outings in each round of the NCACs.

Stupid extra rain day in the Adrian regional that shouldn’t have been….shakes head.
