Regionals underway
May
2009
TCNJ has opened up a big lead, WPI is beginning to pull away and CNU and W&J are locked up in a tight first-round battle as the 10 a.m. ET games get into the later innings.
Busy day of Division III baseball. They are indeed playing at Oshkosh — the Net connection in the press box needs to be looked at and a tech has been dispatched but they aren’t expecting to be up and running with live stats until 1 p.m. ET. St. Olaf and Beloit were scoreless in the fourth when we called for an update a few minutes ago.
Been watching the New England video out of the corner of my eye and it’s been a great production so far. Not quite what D3Cast provided from Harwich in terms of replays and graphics in previous years, but the call of the game is solid and there are multiple camera angles to choose from, so it’s definitely worth your time.
Still trying to track down more audio links. Just uncovered that UW-Whitewater will have its games on the local radio and audio stream, so we’ve added that to the Scoreboard page. That’s if the Central Regional gets that game in today. They’re meeting in Moline at 2 p.m. ET to see if they can find a window to squeeze games into. If they decide to get that first game underway, it would probably be around 4 p.m. ET.
Consider this a central meeting place to discuss all eight regionals. We’ll be up late tonight.

Keith Carter clears the bases with a double, cutting WPI’s lead to 6-5 over Suffolk. Rally was compounded by a dropped fly ball in right field.
Carter needs just a single for the cycle. He has four RBI for the day.
May 13th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
St. Olaf strikes first and leads Beloit 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Oshkosh folks report cold and overcast, expecting rain around 1 p.m. CT, then severe rain overnight. We might be looking at getting just two of the four games in there today.
May 13th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
WPI retakes the lead on a flare single into right field by Joe Walsh. 7-6 top 8.
May 13th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Kind of surprised to see Olaf only winning 1-0 with their lineup
Midwest regional only has 3 games today, last one starting at 4ct. The Saint Scholastica game will have live audio as well http://www.csssaints.com/ then just click on live stats
May 13th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
Olaf is still 1-0 in the 7th
May 13th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
WPI holds on, gunning the tying run at the plate on an infield bouncer and getting Keith Carter out on a fly to right to end the game.
May 13th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Cortland is threatening to break a scoreless tie with Clarkson in the bottom of the third inning. The first two frames were dominated by Clarkson’s Rick Bitner and Cortland’s Matt Tone.
And as I type this, Kevin “Action” Jackson singles home Matt June to put Cortland ahead 1-0.
May 13th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Still 1-0 Olaf in the 8th.
They are now saying that stats for the midwest wont be avaiable until 3pm ct
May 13th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Mideast Regional is being delayed by rain…
Looks like at least another hour before the first round of showers moves out of Adrian.
May 13th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
3-0 Cortland after three over Clarkson. Additional runs were tacked on by a Steve Nickel sacrifice fly and and RBI triple from Jason Simone.
Bad news for Cortland potentially. Lead-off hitter and starting catcher Anderson Gardner has been replaced by Justin Fredenburg. With no audio, I’m not sure what happened but it will be bad news for Cortland if Gardner is hurt and out for any length of time.
May 13th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Beloit tied it up and sent it into extra innings, tied at 10,

May 13th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Oles walkoff single, bottom 11. 2-1 win.
May 13th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Anybody know who the Oles started on the mound in that game?
May 13th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
I’m afraid I don’t know much of anything. I listened and didn’t get any recap of who started or how the first runs were scored.
May 13th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
UWSP vs. STT should be a fantastic game in Oshkosh… we can only hope that the live stats/audio are available. Hopefully the weather does not affect the outcome.
May 13th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Already put ths in the midwest section:
Beloit threw: Krajewski 8.1, Welborn 2 innings
Olaf: Agneberg 7.1, Olson 2, Loizzo 0.2, Mathison 1 inning
May 13th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
The Central Regional has been wiped out for the day. They’ll try again tomorrow.
The West Regional has been pushed back one hour. They’ll try Hendrix/Pomona-Pitzer at 1 p.m. PT.
May 13th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
And the West Regional has been wiped out for the day as well. Good thing these are six-team regionals.
May 13th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

UWSP has 2nd and 3rd with no outs but doesn’t score. Still 4-4, bottom of 8.
May 13th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
4-4, top of 9.
May 13th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Starters for UWSP and STU are still in.
May 13th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
The CSS broadcast is now on the radio and they will update on the UWSP/STU game… http://www.csssaints.com.
May 13th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
4-4, bottom of 10.
May 13th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
top of 12, Schuld still in for the Tommies.
May 13th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
live stats for the Oshhosh regional are back!

May 13th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
Mideast Regional wiped out by rain as well today…
Looks as though they’re going to try and play four games tomorrow with first pitch for Heide and RHIT scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
May 13th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Tommies beat Pointers 5-4 on a walk-off HR to LF by the Tommy DH Taylor Rahm to start the bottom of the 17th.
UWSP used Scott Williams for 9.0 IP and Jeff Zielke for 7.0 IP plus on batter.
Matt Schuld went 12.0 IP for the Tommies and Kris Edwards pitched 5.0 innings and got the win.
May 13th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
E’town 5 Montclair State 2!
Every game today seems to demonstrate incredible parity across the Division.
May 13th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Shenandoah is up on JHU 4-1 in the bottom of the 3rd.
May 13th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Angeloni is on the mound for JHU.
May 13th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Shenandoah matched JHU’s run in the 5th. JHU batting in the top of the 6th.
May 13th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Thru 6, Shenandoah 7-2. JHU’s Chez Angeloni is still pitching for JHU.
Van Sickler is working for Shenandoah.
May 13th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
T Emr singles in the top of the 7th, but gets stranded at 2nd. SU 7-2
May 13th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
In the JHU top of the 8th…
Bolyard singles, and SU’s Matt Davis relieves Van Sickler who goes to DH.
6 outs remain.
May 13th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
Davis retires JHU on 3 strikeouts. SU has responded with one in the bottom of the 8th.
SU 8-2 going to the 9th.
May 13th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
What a fantastic day of baseball… even with all of the rainouts. First round “upsets” will keep day 2 and 3 interesting in the regions. Many big dogs are against the ropes… looking forward to seeing what they are made of tomorrow and Friday to see if they are really the champions they feel they can be.
May 13th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Final Shenandoah 8, JHU 2, despite 4 SU errors.
May 14th, 2009 at 1:51 am
I had ECSU losing in the 2nd round (I thought WPI would hold Fahey) and then coming back through the loser’s bracket to win, so obviously I think ECSU is still OK. New England was bound to be interesting though with all the aces sloshing around there, and the fact that not many of the teams (nationally, really) have much pitching depth. Trinity held Bayer and got away with it.
I should have taken TCNJ rather than Montclair to finish 2nd in the M-A. They’re the hotter team with better offense right now. Still, upsets are most likely in the first round with underdogs throwing aces and the high seeds tempted to hold their ace.
May 14th, 2009 at 1:54 am
Oh, and the UWSP-UST game proves the value of defense in the postseason. UST got 4 unearned runs on one swing of the bat thanks to two errors by the same person. That was the only runs they had for 16 innings, then they win the ballgame.
May 14th, 2009 at 2:26 am
Oh one more thing. Weather will continue to be a huge story. Fortunately, modeling has predicted very well so far, and I was able to pretty much peg the problems in Moline and Adrian (didn’t look much at McMinnville, though the verification on the model is spot on there).
Thursday
Adrian will probably be an hour or two late getting started, meaning they’ll either start the late game at 9 or 10 if they do.
Mansfield could see rain as early as the morning and most likely by noon. Good chance nothing happens in Mansfield tomorrow.
Lakewood NJ, pretty much the same forecast. May get a window to play 1.
Farmingdale might get a little more time, but will eventually be looking at the same system.
Friday
Good chance nothing happens in Moline.
Adrian could be shut down in the late afternoon and then be a little late getting started again on Saturday AM, much like this AM.
The model past Friday is significantly less reliable, but Sunday morning doesn’t look good for Mansfield, Farmingdale, Lakewood and Salisbury, with the forecast the worst for Salisbury. Monday looks iffy for Salisbury as well.
May 14th, 2009 at 8:32 am
This rain delay was a plus for Wartburg, a negative for Millsaps. At 27-18, Wartburg is obviously a much better teams with Jerrold Martijn (10-1) on the mound. Since Jerrold pitched complete game victories last Thursday and Saturday, an extra day of rest should help a lot in the later innings. Meanwhile, Millsaps hasn’t played in 3 weeks so more rest doesn’t help.
What might help the #1 and #2 teams that didn’t play yesterday is looking at the scores from yesterday. There are no “tuneup” games in the NCAA Regionals. Come ready to play from the start or be prepared to life in the losers bracket.
It will be interesting to see how Millsaps hits the ball after this layoff. On the Millsaps webcast, Hunter Owen said something about never swinging the bat better than he is right now–that’s a scary thought, but I remember that Garner Wetzel and the entire team went wild at the 2006 regionals so maybe the layoff will be a good thing for the Millsaps hitters (in 5 games Garner was 10 of 20 with 4 HRs and 15 rbi’s, and the team scored 56 runs). I guess we’ll see today.
May 14th, 2009 at 11:18 am
St Scholastica takes a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a leadoff homerun
May 14th, 2009 at 11:45 am
Another #1 seed might find themselves in the losers bracket after their opening round game. Upset in the making through 7 up in Adrian:
RHIT – 9
Heide – 0
RHIT’s Derek Eitel has held the Studen Princes to just 3 hits with 7 strikeouts through 7 innings of work!!!
May 14th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Ooops. My bad. Eitel has 5 so’s…
May 14th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Scholastica beats Norbert in 11 innings 7-6. 3rd straight extra inning game in the midwest
May 14th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Never been so happy to be wrong about the weather!
Still looks like it’s coming, just a little slower and maybe they played through some raindrops already, I don’t know.
Rose-Hulman performed well as expected. Concordia made McDowell throw a ton of pitches but just couldn’t break through until it was too late.
May 14th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Well after all of today’s results, maybe the ncaa can get off the NJAC. Montclair showed why they didnt deserve to be in the tournament. Maybe the MAC can get some respect after the way their teams are performing.
May 14th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
LOL yeah one bad team out of three. An NJAC team will probably still win the tournament. It’s the best conference in the country pretty much every year.
May 14th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
The two MAC’s could still well go 1-3. Yawn. Maybe a little early to start crowing.
May 14th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Scholastica up 3-0 over Thomas after 6. Kummet loses no hitter in 6th on a bad bounce over first baseman’s head
May 15th, 2009 at 10:39 am
Central Regional in danger of being wiped out today.
May 15th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Anyone know why the heck they scrubbed the night game at Adrian? I know it rained, but it sure looks on the radar like for the most part the rain is staying northeast of them and may have been able to get the game in.
Wooster is helped by this, they get an extra day of rest of McDowell, who now I wouldn’t be surprised to see Pettorini bring back tomorrow.
Anyone know if the lineups that were on the livestats are official — ie did the teams exchange lineup cards, give them to the umpire, etc?
