66 Responses to “NCAA regional rankings, Week 1”

  1. dixon Says:

    First Impressions:

Not a lot of surprises for the first rankings. The only team with a playoff bid is not here. NC Wesleyan needed the conference win to get in the playoffs.

Frostburg State, FDU-Florham, SUNY-Old Westbury and Rockford were flying below my radar.

If the rankings are a guide who gets the 3 8 team regionals, you have New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Mideast.

It appears Pacific Lutheran is in good shape. George Fox or Linfield can make the next list if one sweeps the other.

  2. Ralph Turner Says:

All right, friends. Let’s weigh in on this.

    West Region –

    Redlands vs. Cal Lu

Head-to-head Cal LU wins the series over Redlands, 2-1.
Cal Lu is 10-2 in non-conference in-region games (LaSierra WWW, Chapman WL, Hendirix W, CSUEB WWW, Menlo WWL)
    In-region ranked teams 0-3 (P-P LLL)
LaSierra may be killing the OWP/OOWP.

Redlands lost the Cal Lu series 1-2.
Redlands is 7-4 in non-conference in-region games ( Whittier L, Pac Lu WL, CSUEB WWL, Menlo W, UPS WL, Chapman W, CMS W))
In-region ranked teams 1-2 (Pac Lu)

McMurry slides in on OWP/OOWP which we cannot see. (The last 4 games are not considered. McM is 25-15/22-14.

I also think that they are at the head of a log jam including Texas Lutheran, HSU, Cal Lutheran, GFU, Linfield and Chapman.

    Pool B’s in the rankings…

    St Scholastica (CSS)
    Ithaca
    Salisbury
    York PA

First look at “solid” Pool C’s

    CCIW runner-up (Carthage/IWU/Augie)
NJAC runner-up and “3rd place” (Kean, Montclair State, Rowan, TCNJ)
    OAC runner-up (Heidelberg/Otterbein/maybe Marietta)
    WIAC runner-up (UWW/UWSP)
    LEC runner-up (USM/ECSU)
    NEWMAC runner-up (Wheaton MA/WPI)
USAC runner-up Shenandoah (looking strong, may be as close to a “lock” as we have)
SCIAC runner-up (PP. Redlands, Cal Lu)

  3. John Says:

Who gets the remaining Pool B slots?

    Chapman and….?

  4. Ralph Turner Says:

    Other Pool B’s?

Bethany Lutheran? Wesley? Susquehanna? Wash U StL? Emory?

  5. MartyandJoe Says:

    Ralph,

Just so I am understanding you correctly: by “solid” Pool C’s do you mean that you expect those conferences to get two and in some cases three (CCIW, NJAC, OAC, SCIAC) teams into the field of 54??

    Thanks for your help.

  6. Ralph Turner Says:

Cal Lu is 23-4 in-region. They have series with PP and Whittier remaining.

  7. dixon Says:

If we assume that Salisbury, York, St. Scholastica, and Ithaca all get Pool B bids (looking pretty good at this time).

Chapman will have an opportunity to make a move at their Invitational. Bethany Lutheran should do what they can to contiune to be the clear number two in the UMAC and a tournament win over St. Scholastica will be key. I believe that these two have the inside track but they have to win their way in

Washington (Mo.) has a chance also and needs to pile up as many wins, just as Susquehanna. They are probably looking at Chapman or Bethany Lutheran to stumble.

Wesley is probably too far out for a pool B bid but a win against Shenandoah at the end of the season might be enough to get them a serious look. Emory lost a lot with the sweep by Methodist. That series might have put them with too much to make up.

  8. oshdude Says:

In my area, I think I’d slot Wash U ahead of BLC, which has an OWP of around .450. Wish I knew Wash U’s OWP, although it has to be better than .450. IF CSS somehow doesn’t win the UMAC title like it has every year, then BLC definitely has a shot. But that would be a huge upset.

OWP looks to be very important again this year. CSS has one in-region loss – to St. Thomas – and is ranked behind UST and its five in-region losses. UST’s impressive OWP is .115 higher than CSS’s.

Something I’ll have to remember … the rankings reflect results through Tuesday, not Monday like I thought.

  9. MartyandJoe Says:

    Ralph,

Wrote a message a few hours ago, which was just posted. Wanted to make sure you didn’t miss it.

  10. Ralph Turner Says:

    Marty and Joe,

I am going out on the limb after the first regional rankings to get some fans assessing what Pool C will look like this year.

I like the SCIAC because they don’t have a post-season tourney to mess up the “in-region” records. The same for the NWC.
    ++++++++++++++++++++
    West Region
    1. Pomona-Pitzer 31-3 23-1 (Cal Lu and LaVerne. The Sagehens are 15-0 in the SCIAC.)
    2. Texas-Tyler 32-8 29-7 (First round of the ASC vs McM)
    3. Pacific Lutheran 27-8 25-8 (Finishes NWC with 9-14 conference Puget Sound. No post-season tourney.)
    4. Redlands 22-12 19-10 (tough finish — at the Chapman tourney against Menlo, CSU-EB and Chapman and then 3 games at CMS. Redlands is 12-6 in the SCIAC.)
    5. Texas-Dallas 25-15 24-11 (First round of the ASC tourney at Hardin-Simmons)
    6. McMurry 22-14 19-13 (First round of the ASC at UT-Tyler).

See how the ASC will knock out two and maybe three of these teams!

GFU 29-8/26-5/24-4 hosts Linfield in a 4-game series (I don’t know why GFU is playing 41 games.?! They had 4 at Hawai’i Hilo, 2 with Concordia Portland and 3 with CSU-East Bay on top of the 32 games NWC season. Was one game with UH-Hilo an exhibition?)

Cal Lu is 27-7/23-4/13-2 with PP and Whittier remaining. (Cal Lu wins the SCIAC bid with the run the table.)

I don’t know whether the NWC gets a Pool C bid again this season.

I think that the NJAC is the only conference to get three teams (2 Pool C bids) in the tourney. Jim Dixon had the fan poll on the home page about conferences that earn Pool C bids. With the first regional rankings, these are my picks for multiple bids.

  11. sandra D Says:

Looking at the New York Region, confused about where some other teams are and where these others came from. Old Westbury, Fredonia??? Just saw Ithaca today play ROchester. Rochester Threw a kid that hasn’t throw in 2 weeks while Ithaca Threw there #1. Not Impressed with Ithaca at all. Rochester’s Bullpen Blew up but they were head and shoulders better than Ithaca. Figure it will all even out as we go but Fredonia and Old Westbury??? C’mon folks, you have to play good teams to get in. SUNYAC is down and what is the other conference????????

  12. Ralph Turner Says:

    Central Region
    1. Carthage 21-5 17-2 CCIW (12-1 in CCIW)
    2. Illinois Wesleyan 20-8 18-7 CCIW Trails Carthage by 3.5 games (plays Augie on May 1-2; currently 11-4 in CCIW)
    3. Webster 21-11 20-7 SLIAC
    4. Buena Vista 24-7 19-6 IIAC
    5. Augustana 21-10 17-7 CCIW (8-6 in CCIW)
    6. Beloit 20-5 14-3 NWC

    3. Shenandoah 31-8 25-7 USA South (NC Wesleyan clinched Pool A bid)
    4. Christopher Newport 21-9-1 17-9 USA South
    5. York (Pa.) 24-9 24-9 Pool B (Capital AC)

No team from the ODAC is represented.

  19. John Says:

So would you say this is a pretty accurate picture of Pool B, with the top 4 teams pretty much locks…

    1. Salisbury 33-5
    2. St. Scholastica 24-2
    3. Ithaca 22-6
    4. York (PA) 25-9
    5. Chapman 21-13
    6. Bethany Lutheran 22-6
    7. WashU 18-9
    9. Susquehanna 21-12

Any chance any of these teams end up in Pool C?

  20. Ralph Turner Says:

John, I like your list from 5-8, and I don’t know how much difference there is there.

We have a solid 1/4th of the season left (with respect the “in-region” games in the regular season and tourneys.)

BLC needs to “split” the series with CSS.

IMHO, Chapman must win 5 of 6 (only losing to Redlands at most).

Wash U can really help their OWP/OOWP. (10 in-region games left. I count their in-region at 18-8. McKendree is NAIA.)

Susquehanna lost to Muhlenberg tonight! (21-13/ I think 21-13 /14-4) Susque has Centenary NJ for 2 and then the Landmark tourney. I think that they can max out at 26-13.

  21. Milby Says:

SU (32-8) and 26-7 “in-region” now with 7-0 win over the Stevenson University Mustangs in Glen Burnie, MD this evening.

  22. Milby Says:

Sorry, it was 9-0 SU (32-8) and now 26-7 “in-region” over the Stevenson University Mustangs in Glen Burnie,MD this evening.

  23. Ralph Turner Says:

Milby, you mean the Shenandoah University SU and not the Salisbury (State) University SU, don’t you. ;-)

  24. Ralph Turner Says:

    Re: Bethany Lutheran.

They will not play the 3rd game in the series with CSS.

There is no post-season tourney for the UMAC, listed on the conference web page.

  25. Milby Says:

IF Millsaps does NOT win their conference tourney, what kind of affect will it have in the South Region on the “Pool C” ?

Does anyone know IF Millsaps will go to Salisbury, MD for Reg’l play ?

  26. BRONKO7 Says:

There is a UMAC tourney, so Bethany Lutheran will get their shot at CSS.
    May 7-9 in Duluth, MN.

  27. Ralph Turner Says:

Millsaps can be flown to wherever the NCAA needs to balance a bracket.

  28. Milby Says:

So South Region in Salisbury, MD appears to be an 6-team bracket?

  29. oshdude Says:

Here’s my original thing … I doubt BLC gets in with a .454 OWP, and it’s not gonna get any better with the remaining schedule. Ralph and/or John, if you make the trip, the brats are on me at the World Series if I’m wrong. Wash U HAS to be ahead of BLC right now. Sometimes even a 19-4 in-region record just doesn’t look very good.
    4-0 North Central (MN) (0-19 in-region)
    0-1 Hamline
    1-1 Carleton (15-10)
    2-0 Wisconsin Lutheran (4-19)
    3-0 Presentation (9-12)
    3-0 Martin Luther (9-13)
    0-2 St. Scholastica
    3-0 Crown (2-16)
    3-0 Northwestern (13-11)
Yet to play in the regular season …
    Minnesota-Morris (5-14)
    Gustavus (11-11)
    Northland (6-12)

This forced me to figure Wash U’s OWP. It’s about .463 (I didn’t calculate new in-region records since Monday, but there have not been more than three or four impactful games for Wash U). LOL. I’ll still buy the brats. It would be amazing if BLC gets in with that resume, assuming CSS wins the UMAC tourney for the billionth time.

  30. Ralph Turner Says:

oshdude, I cannot find any information on the UMAC tourney! Not on the CSS schedule! Not on the UMAC webpage! No place!

I appreciate the “drill down” on BLC. Bethany needs/needed a win over CSS to get a Pool B bid. It would have helped to have a stronger record vs. the MIAC, too.

Susquehanna lost to Muhlenberg yesterday…not good!

  31. oshdude Says:

C’mon, Ralph, use the links on my blog for handy info on the MW.
    UMAC tourney, 5/7-9 at CSS.
    http://www.umacathletics.com/Sports/gen/2008/2009%20UMAC%20Baseball%20Championship%20Information.asp

Not sure what drill down means, but I’m a little slow. Wasn’t trying to bag on BLC if that’s what you meant. I’d be pleased/dumbfounded if two UMAC teams made it. Just didn’t think BLC had a better resume than Wash U. Still not certain if BLC does, but it’s much closer than I anticipated.

  32. Ralph Turner Says:

    +1! oshdude!

    Thanks.

BLC dramatically helps their case with a very strong tourney!

(”Drill down” is a term that my professional friends use when looking deeper into data, databases and other sources of info.) :-)

  33. narch1 Says:

lynchburg goes 0-2 in the odac tourney…i don’t think they’re a “bubble” team themselves, but when a #1 gets bumped from a tournament, it doesn’t help the other bubble teams

why is it that the south only ranks 5 teams and everyone else ranks 6 (or more)?

  34. Ralph Turner Says:

narch1, I will look at that tonight. I think that the South doesn’t have enough members. The Evaluation ratio is usually 1 for every 6.5 teams which means 39 teams in the Region. The South only has 36 teams.

  35. Ralph Turner Says:

We can get an idea of what Millsaps Pool C chances are when the next 2 regional rankings come out. If they stay ahead of Shenandoah, then I think they are in. If they stay ahead of CNU, then they may have a chance.

I don’t think that the South Region gets 3 Pool C bids.

  36. Ralph Turner Says:

PP beats Cal Lu 8-7 tonight. DH tomorrow.

  37. dukes Says:

In regards to the UMAC possibly getting two teams in…wow. I realize from scanning the various boards it is a down year in many areas, but that would be quite amazing.

Still think there might be a chance of getting two WIAC or two MIAC? Because honestly, if it came down to it, the #2 WIAC or MIAC team would be much better suited for regional play than BLC. Oshdude is right on with his assessment IMO.

  38. oshdude Says:

BLC did its part, outscoring UMM by a combined 45-2 (including 32-0) in a DH sweep.

  39. sandman Says:

First of all who is doing these rankings? Carthage is 18-1 in region…and how can Heidleburg be 26-0 overall then 22-5 in region? doesnt make sense..please explain

The Heidelberg record is listed that way at the NCAA web site. That typo belongs to the NCAA.

Heidelberg was 26-6 when the rankings were considered.

  41. Ralph Turner Says:

    Sandman,

Lakeland and UW-Whitewater are in-region games for Carthage by virtue of being in Admin Region #4. See Handbook.

    6. McMurry 22-14 19-13 Pool C lost to UTT in first round

  46. Ralph Turner Says:

ODAC Pool A bid is Washington and Lee.

No good Pool C candidates in the ODAC.

  47. John Says:

Anyone know what the potential central region bracket looks like?

  48. Ralph Turner Says:

    Central bracket?

Doing the brackets is the hardest part for us lay people to do, because we don’t have access to the travel expense numbers that the committee sees.

  49. Stan Says:

When are the people who do these rankings finally going to take Strength of schedule into account. Just because you have over 25 wins in region doesnt make you a good team. If you are going to be in the regional rankings you should have to have played other teams that are being ranked also, not just the bottom feeders of every conference. Wilkes (please who have they played!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). FDU come on (what team out of conference have they played that isnt in last place) LETS GO! do a little extra research one time. These two teams are bound to take a fall quick once they play a team that has won games.

  50. Pat Coleman Says:

Stan — what is the OWP and OOWP of those teams, and who would you have them rank instead?

  51. Stan Says:

anyone who plays their home games on big boy fields not little league fields.

  52. Stan Says:

FDU at least scheduled some decent teams, i mean they did play Kean and Rowan, but wilkes has no one on this list scheduled except FDU

  53. Pat Coleman Says:

Gotcha — I just wanted to see if you had something to add or were just going to gripe about a couple teams.

Nine teams must be ranked. You should come up with a couple teams you’d expect to be ranked instead, and get the numbers to prove it. Because those people you claim don’t look at strength of schedule actually DO have all those numbers in front of them. We don’t.

  54. Stan Says:

what about the teams that finished ahead of them in the conference?

  55. Pat Coleman Says:

If you’re trying to hint at Manhattanville, it’s probably helpful to remember that these rankings were through April 21, at which point your record was 19-14. Obviously going 4-1 since the last ranking will help.

But the ranking and selection criteria don’t include your opinion of the type of field they play on.

  56. Stan Says:

Manhattanville who finished first in the conference played 7 teams on the list. Alvernia who finished 3rd in the conference played 3 teams on this list. How about those two?

  57. Stan Says:

    Wilkes out of conference schedule……..

Combined the teams they played were 226-272 with 9 of 16 out of conference games being played against teams that finished under .500

  58. Pat Coleman Says:

    Good, you’re getting there.

Here’s the championships handbook with the list of the actual selection criteria. You might want to take a look.

  59. Stan Says:

    Manhattanville out of conference schedule….

Combined teams they played were 316-214 with only 4 out of 16 games being against teams under .500. Not to mention Kean, Cortland (DH), East Conn, St. Scholastica, and Penn State Behrand were all on that list. No wonder Wilkes has a better overall record.

  60. Stan Says:

Thank you for the hand book

  61. Stan Says:

i know fields are not taken into consideration, but come on have you seen it??

  62. Stan Says:

instead of yelling fence to your centerfielder you have to yell TREE!!!!

  63. John Says:

Updated records for the teams ranked i the central region…

    Central Region
    1. Carthage 23-5 19-2
    2. Illinois Wesleyan 21-10 19-9

    4. Buena Vista 25-9 20-8
    5. Augustana 21-12 17-9
    6. Beloit 22-7 16-5

  64. rob Says:

Any opinions on who can make it from the South region? Without mentioning any team names my son plays on a ranked team in this region and I’m curious who everyone thinks is the stronger teams.

  65. Ralph Turner Says:

Rob, we will have a much better idea tomorrow when the second regional rankings are released.

    How far did Millsaps fall?

    Where is York?

Has NCWC or W&L displaced someone?

  66. oshdude Says:

I don’t think some of those Central records above are correct. For this week’s rankings, here’s what I think the committee saw.
    Carthage 21-2
    Webster 26-7
    Augustana 18-10
