Day 3 - Baseball Championship

Trinity is impressing folks here. They play late again and Trinity is the one team who has escaped without the obligatory press conference due to the late hour. Johns Hopkins has yet to play their best game and still in the winners bracket. They will need those bats when they face the Bantams tonight.

With three errors each, the Liinfield/Trinity game was not the best played defensively. Linfield did played well offensively. They had a lot of runners on base but could not get the big hit. They threatened to pull off the upset and almost did, coming up just a run short.

The game is on and Kevin Zalnis just ties a WS record with assists in an inning (3)

On main page you state 2 more teams will be gone after Sunday. That’s right. But asking if it could be JHU or Tis wrong, I think. Those teams are 2-0 and a loss today, Sunday, does not eliminate either. With one loss, the loser of today’s JHU-Trinity will play tomw, Monday and the winner will play Tuesday. Right? Also, will UW be broadcasting the JHU-Trinity game? I think so and if so that’s great.

I can see why Trinity is impressing folks.

It’s starting to look like they could actually go through the season undefeated. They’ve got two games to win and two first-team all americans to use on the mound. Tonight is obviously a huge game between statistically the best pitching team and the best offensive teams in the tournament. I think it’s bigger for Trinity though because they don’t seem to be the kind that can slug their way past people.

Top of the 8th, a wild pitch has allowed runners to move to second and third with one out, and Chapman cannot push either home.

Home run by Joe Munn off Kitchens in the bottom of the 8th gives a big insurance run. That is the first homer of the year off Kitchens. Now UWW 6-4.

  4. Ralph Turner Says:

    Three outs remain for Chapman…

UWW scored 2 in the bottom of the 8th to push the lead back to 3 runs, 7-4.

In the Chapman top of the 9th,

    Pearson singles to left.
    Redding flies to third.
    Prechtl on by fielder’s choice.
    Yacko grounds out, 5-3.

    0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors, 1 LOB.

UWW wins 7-4. Chapman goes home!

  5. Ralph Turner Says:

Linfield is down one run and have 6 outs left.

  6. Ralph Turner Says:

    Linfield College 8th
    Bachofner struck out swinging.
S Davis doubled to left center.
Cederberg pinch ran for S Davis.
    Fenton fouled out to 1b.
Van Cleave flied out to lf.
    0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors, 1 LOB.

Stranded a runner at second with one out!

  7. Ralph Turner Says:

Linfield left the bases loaded in the 9th.

Final Adrian 3 (two of which were unearned), Linfield 2.

This series has been “all about” pitching defense and “small ball” (as it usually is).

Big game tonight — fighting for a day off tomorrow. Which staff would benefit more from a day off?

JHU…Trinity has the pitching depth to come out and win 3 games in 2 days…Just my opinion…

It is nice to be on time for the first time in the tournament. Every game started on time and the rain has stayed away. The brief shower this morning had no effect on the play. Linfield had some close losses this tournament and with a couple of timely hits they could be playing the game tonight.

The bottom line is that what was an eight team tournament has changed to a four team tournament. What was a long day will turn into short days as we switch to two games tomorrow and what might be just a single game on Tuesday.

My concern is that the darkening skies might be related to a storm headed our way currently over Stevens Point instead of the coming of night.

What would it be a championship with out a rain dealy. The tarp is being pulled

Our photographer on the field, Larry Radloff, reports the teams are playing tic-tac-toe during the rain delay on a baseball, taking their turn and rolling it between the dugouts. :)

  13. oshdude Says:

Get the rain delay entertainment cued up. Either get the game over in 45 minutes or settle in for a long night, Jim. I’m OK with not being there tonight … it’s nasty in Oshkosh right now. That’s 20 miles away.

It was fun seeing teams I’ve never seen in Grand Chute before. Hop, Linfield and Adrian have some really cool fans and parents. Of course it’s always nice to catch up with the regulars from Chapman and seeing Whitewater for what seems like the 20th time in the past month. I especially enjoyed my clique of Linfield mothers down the LF line.

As a whole, the Hop fans are the loudest fans since Carthage and maybe as far back as Lakeland.

Watching Alex Webster pitch for Adrian was a treat. Hope MIAA fans knew what they had with that guy. He’s defintely in my top 5 favorite players – right up there with Glushon – since the WS moved to Grand Chute. I could watch him work over batters everyday.

No one asked, but those have been my favorite moments so far this year. And I’ll take Trinity. You can have everyone else the field. I doubt anyone beats Trinity besides Trinity.

  14. dixon Says:

The only game going on here is a game of tic-tac-toe. Trinity threw a ball “gotta love this Wisc weather” into JHU dougout. The ball returned to Trinity’s dougout with a tic-tac-toe game and the reply “wanta play?”

Round one went to Johns Hopkins.

Wait the tarp is being pulled…

  15. oshdude Says:

That’s what I was saying … get it over in 45 minutes.

  16. AG Says:

You have to appreciate what teams will do to entertain themselves in a rain delay.
