Day 2 Baseball Championship
May
2008
Got to love this. Less than 8 hours ago I left the ballpark and here I am again. The sun is out and the music is great. Adrian is getting ready and Kean is here I am sure.
It was a great baseball yesterday. The most lobsided score was 5-1 and that was close until the end. I ecpected this. The best teams in the nation with their best pitching staffs and this is usually what you see.
I have less faith that one of the teams starting today in the losers bracket can make it out winners. Kean and Cortland State have the pitching. Adrian is new to the show and they have a big hurdle today with Kean. UW-Whitewater was just flat against Linfield and it gets tougher with a draw against Cortland State. Chpman and Trinity have to be the favorites but Johns Hopkins will find their hitting stroke and Linfield is disciplined with an experienced team that could just be the team to end Trinity’s winning streak.
With less than an hour to go to first pitch - Play Ball.

I was thinking that it’s unfortunate that a team that played such a great game yesterday could be sent home in a few hours, but then I realized that all four losing teams played great games …

May 24th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Adrian’s not done half bad for a team Wooster fans were feeling good about drawing!
I get the impression these guys and Heidelberg are so similar…neither team knows what it’s like to give up.
Vandike’s work…that’s great relief; not coming on with 0 outs in the 9th and a 2 run lead and managing not to blow it.
May 24th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Spence, I think we know why you had trouble getting the links to work yesterday!
Those Wooster fans had hacked your computer!
May 24th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
A disappointing loss for Kean. This is the second year in a row, the defending champion goes home with a 0-2 record. Adrian looked good and the head coach is making the right moves.
The second game is moving along. Cortland needs to get there bats going of they will suffer the same fate as Kean. Five left on through five innings where UW-Whitewater has left only two. Three if the difference in both the LOB and the score.
Zalnis’s home runt was a bomb. There was no doubt about it.
May 24th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
I’d be very tempted to go to Yacko to start the 6th if I was Chapman unless they have a big inning offensively (3 runs or more).
He only threw to 7 batters yesterday and had 0 strikeouts and 0 walks so I’m guessing he didn’t throw more than 30 pitches.
May 24th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Yacko is in for Chapman.
Whitewater took it to Cortland State earlier. Cortland never did get the big hit. They had opportunities in both games but never capitalized on them. They had the worst draw playing at night then turning around less than 10 hours later to get ready for their second game. If that played a factor in the loss, nobody would say but Whitewater was ready for Cortland.
You could see in the later innings, Coach Brown was giving some players some playing time. “no matter how much time it delayed the game, I was going to get them in” Brown said in teh post game interview room
May 24th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Jim, can you give an explanation of what happened when Vass was cut down on the bases to lead off the 8th?
That would seem to have been a big missed chance, since they probably bunt with Hurst no matter whether Vass is at 1st or 2nd.
May 24th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Wow…
…how about HOPKINS sitting at 2-0!??! Can’t wait to read the write-up on that one. Guess they got battle tested coming out of the South region.
May 24th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Hopkins is sitting pretty at 2-0. They scouted Trinity last night and saw a pretty good team. They did not see Linfield Play but if they play them, they must be pretty good themselves if they win.
The play in the eighth was an infield hit to third. JHU head Coach thought it was foul ans was prepared to argue the call. The third baseman over threw first but Vass would have been safe. The second baseman rounded up the ball and the short stop deeked the runner. Vass sprinted to second but the throw was in time.

Wow…big mistake on the basepaths. I figured that’s what happened but couldn’t figure out why the second baseman threw it rather than the first baseman.
May 25th, 2008 at 12:01 am
This is starting to look like Trinity really could have an undefeated season and win this thing.
Finish off tonight, Barnard goes tomorrow, then you get Kiely back on full rest and Bayer in relief on short rest.
May 25th, 2008 at 12:04 am
Trinity College 6th
K. Graham singled to left field.
J. Wood flied out to rf.
DiBenedetto grounded into double play ss to 2b to 1b; K. Graham out on the play.
0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors, 0 LOB.
This narrative does not do justice to the real action.
The Graham single was off the wall on the fly and perfectly played by the left fielder. The rf’s back was against the wall as they pulled in the fly. They almost doubled the Bantam who already had rounded second base the ball was caught.
This all ended with a typical 643 GDP but the first balls were well stuck and were over the fence in a lot of parks.
May 25th, 2008 at 12:10 am
Two runs in the Top of the 7th are nice, but one more big hit could’ve blown it open. Guess the Bants will have to settle for a two-run lead with nine outs (hopefully) left.
May 25th, 2008 at 12:14 am
Make that six outs. Nice clean inning there.
May 25th, 2008 at 12:34 am
Oof. Not so much that time. A three-run shot brings the Wildcats within one run.
Oh, Scott Brosius. First you break my heart as a Mets fan. Must you do it again?
May 25th, 2008 at 12:54 am
PHEEEEW
Regan gets out of ninth inning trouble to preserve the Bantams victory.
Trinity (Conn.) 6
Linfield 5 - Final
The Clamorin’ Clucks improve to 43-0 and meet Johns Hopkins tomorrow. Linfield plays Adrian in an elimination game.
