Day 1 of the Championships

On a cloudy and cool day with a touch of wind it is 0-0 in the second inning of the Chapman-Kean game. Just settling in to what will be a long day here at Fox Cities Stadium. A good early crowd cheering on both teams. The support looks pretty equally between the Cougar and Panther supporters.

Wait that almost was a 1-6-4-6-3 putout at first of dh Mattonelli.

Time to get out and visit with the crowd. I’ll be posting notes throughout the day so check back. If your here at the games - look for me in my yellow hat and traditional hawaiian shirt and say hello.

Havn’et see the game obviously but it seems like Kean is leaving a lot of duck on the pond…

So glad to see my NJ alma mater make its confident way in the world of college athetics, much like its fellow state U, Rutgers, located just down the turnpike. Good luck to the Cougars!

Let me just say I love the prestosports livestats feed. The statistical detail on the team stats is great.

Kitchens and Yacko combine for just 3 strikeouts against a team that doesn’t strike out, but Chapman still wins. Impressive.

Game could hardly have been more even statistically. Chapman left one more runner than Kean and sent 3 more batters to the plate.

Chapman was 3 of 13 chances with runners in scoring position, Kean only got 7 and got hits on 2.

Biggest difference I can see is the double plays (obviously), Kean didn’t get as many runners to scoring position before two outs, and Chapman got a huge run in the 4th on a BB, SB, F8 advance, IF RBI 1B. Didn’t look big at the time, but difference between 3-2 and 2-2 going to the 8th would have been vast.

In the 5th, Kean lost a runner with less than 2 outs to a caught stealing. Not to be critical, but with the 3 and 4 hitters due that was a real missed opportunity to put a crooked number up.

  4. Ralph Turner Says:

My West Coast friends would razz me about opponents’ letting “Chapman off the hook”.

I think that we saw that Kean had runners in scoring position that could not score by the third out in innings # 2, 4, 6 and 7. Quod est demonstratum, Q.E.D. !

Yacko faced 7 batters and got 7 outs!

I am glad that it is Kean that gets the chance to wreak havoc in the losers’ bracket.

Sun is out and a great win by Chapman. I was able to get out and talk to a few fans.

Good news is that Trinity will have an audio broadcast of tonights game against Cortland State. Check in and listen if you cannot make it to the ball park.

Nick Venezia is now dancing to Miley Cyrus’s See You Again and the crowd is going crazy. The Johns Hopkins fans are here in force.

  6. Spence Says:

Jim, do you have the live stat link for the next game?

Jim, do you have the live stat link for the next game

Try ths one, not sure how good it is but it’s the only one I could find

    http://www.titans.uwosh.edu/livestats3/xlive.htm

  8. dixon Says:

All links are available from the d3baseball scoreboard

  9. Ralph Turner Says:

Adrian and JHU going to the 11th, tied at 2!

  10. Spence Says:

The links on the scoreboard are busted for me in both IE and Firefox. I mentioned this to Coleman and he said he’s reported it but doubted it would get fixed.

During game 1 you had it linked directly off the main page and I was able to get onto Kean’s feed that way.

  11. dixon Says:

What a game. Alex Webster kept the Blue Jays off the scoreboard until the 6th inning. Maybe Adrian wants their day in the sun (of which in contrast to last game, there is plenty). It is Ryan Domschott’s game to win or lose.

Both team’s fans are in great voice. It is Alexander Younce’s mom who is leading the cheers for the Bulldogs in what is starting to look like a sea of purple in the stands. The original start time for the UW-Whitewater game has come and gone but the Warhawks are gathering. The Johns Hopkins crowd is holding their own against the influx of Linfield fans.

  12. AG Says:

    Looks like a great game…
…and gonna be a late night for some teams.

  13. paulheering Says:

Links working great for me. Great game. If I am trusting the announcer this is only the second time Hopkins has been held under 5 runs (in 40+ games) and Adrian did it for 13+ innings, only to come out on the wrong end.

  14. Evan Says:

As a member of the 2003 Chapman team that won The Series, it’s great to see the West Cost finally getting some respect. This website has done a great job of recognizing the West Coast talent, in a divison that is dominated by Midwest and East Coast teams. If CU or Linfield (longshot…I know), can take it this year, that’ll be 3 out of the past 6 years for a region that typically only sends one team. Go Panthers…

  15. admin Says:

Spence — if you’re still having a problem, not sure what to tell you. Presto looked at it and made fixes. I can now use it on every browser I have: IE 6, IE 7, FF 2 and Safari. Are you on a system that blocks java at all or is it corrupted somehow?

  16. Spence Says:

    I don’t know, honestly.

I think Linfield’s got as good a chance as anyone. 4 solid starting pitchers, don’t beat themselves in the field.

  17. Ralph Turner Says:

Trinity left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 3rd.

    Still no score!

  18. admin Says:

The Bantams strike first in the fourth, however.

  19. Ralph Turner Says:

Cortland only scores one run after having runners on second and third in the top of the 5th and no outs! Tied at 1.

  20. dixon Says:

The Linfield Wildcats helped get the tournament back on track. We only started 80 minutes late with the Cortland and Trinity game.

Linfield is fun to watch. They are aggressive and play a fundamental game. All the players have wrist cards so the Coach can change the signs on a moments notice. That old Yankee knows all the tricks.

Linfield held out their NWC pitcher of the year for the winner of tonights matchup with the Red Dragons and the Bantams.

  21. Spence Says:

Figured out the problem on the links.

Tone seems to be saying: “Honorable mention my ass!”

  22. Ralph Turner Says:

Bottom of the 7th, DiBendetto and Abbott walk; SAC bunt by Sullivan to advance the runners; Bourdon walks to load the bases with one out. Cortland’s Matt Tone is relieved by Ryan Hooper 8 app, 4-0, 29.2 IP, 37 K’s, 5 BB’s, 33 hits.

  23. Ralph Turner Says:

Bottom of the seventh, Hooper gets out of the inning on a Fielder’s Choice, 6-2, and a foul out to the 3B. Bases left loaded by Trinity. Top of the 8th, 1-1, Kiely returns to the mound for the Bantams.

    1 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors, 2 LOB.

    Trinity 2, Cortland 1.

  29. Spence Says:

Wow that had to be a bit of a letdown for an ending to what sounds like a great game.

Trinity rolls on…no matter what happens from here, safe to say all questions as to legitimacy of their success are answered.

  30. Ralph Turner Says:

The Trinity broadcaster confessed that he did not know what time it was on the West Coast.

Clearly, another case of East Coast bias!

Oh well, maybe Linfield can rectify the situation tomorrow night!

    :-)

  31. Spence Says:

FYI for those who don’t know (if you’re in Appleton, you do) the ABCA all-american teams are out and on the championships site.

Check out the d3baseball all american team thread for some comparisons and fun facts.
