An ode to 53 die-hards

When we wrote on the front page on Tuesday that games “threaten to go past midnight” we were speaking from experience. And that experience was relived Wednesday night in Auburn and elsewhere as the final pitches of the Ithaca/Ohio Wesleyan game came at about 1:22 a.m. ET.
That’s even late in Alaska.
So to the 53 people listening as Ithaca loaded the bases with none out, down two, and as Ohio Wesleyan wriggled out of the jam to get the W, thanks for staying up late. It was a doozy of a Day 1, and Day 2 is just getting started.

Forget the 53 listeners, what about the people enduring the 16+ hours of “captivity” as former Marietta-area radio and TV personality Mike McNamara used to call it.
Working regionals and the Series are great…some of the best memories of my early adult life. But you just want to sleep for about 3 days when they’re over.

True — couldn’t speak to that, thanks for mentioning it.
Worcester State has gone deep three times in the top of the first off St. Joe’s Matt Hart and leads 8-0.

Don’t know how many folks there are that are working all day, but I’m sure there’s more than one or two.
I never had to be at an 8 team regional and never had work every game at the Series. 6 teamers are tough enough.

Illinois Wesleyan goes two-and-out as Linfield wins 5-4.

And the winner of the ridiculous pitcher use is…Tim Pettorini and Wooster.
I guess that wasn’t really an upset, though.
