It is a beautiful day for baseball

Here I sit looking at sunny skies and watching the Eagles and Pointers play baseball. Zimmermann is not disappointing anyone with four strikeouts in a three innings of no hit ball and a run scoring double to put UW-Stevens Point ahead in the first inning.
Bing - there goes another ball an Emory batter could not handle.
Keep checking the blog for my observations as I keep a running commentary on the games today through the end of the Championship.

Looks like a great day on the video, and I see our crack photography staff has had a photo from the morning game up for a while. Enjoy!

Stevens Point loads the bases in both the 4th and 5th but can only net a single run to double their lead over Emory. Zimmermann gets another double to go to 3-3. Emory breaks up the no-hit bid in the fifth. 1-2-3 for both teams in the sixth.
There is a pretty good contingent of Pointers fans but the Emory fans that flew in are the most vocal. Already into the 7th in less than 1.5 hour - this game is moving along.

The Eagles need to get something going. Already in the 8th inning with just a single hit.
Dan Olsson, Montclair State (vs Marietta, May 31, 1984) was the last pitcher to throw a one-hitter in the Championship Round. There has been no no-hitters on the last weekend of D-III baseball

Thanks for the updates! It’s painful to be stuck at work and not able to listen or watch!

Part of Jim’s previous site which we are planing to migrate over to the new server is a box score from that previous one-hitter.

Getting ready for Game 2 with Carthage battling Eastern Connecticut. Will the Red Men get their 20th straight victory? Will Eastern Connecticut start their quest for a fifth title with a win. We will find out starting at 1:15 Central time.
Is this good news for Emory’s Glushon - the losing pitcher in the Dan Olsson one-hitter was Marietta’s Terry Mulholland. Mulholland enjoyed a long MLB career and Dan Olsson (also drafted) did not make the show.

Carthage scores 3 runs, (all unearned ? I missed the first batter, who just showed up on second base!).

I’m out here in Wisconsin… game 1 was a great one. Zimmerman came as advertised. Good hard fastball that me moved in/out/up/down with good consistency. Couple that with a sharp slider with some pretty good tilt and Emory just didn’t have an answer. Talked with some scouts who said they love his athleticism and good, clean arm action. He’s stiull turning the corner and gaining some weight back from the time he had off due to a broken jaw and his velocity is coming right along. Doesn’t hurt to mix in a 3-3 game at the plate with a double, rbi, and run scored. Hearing he’s been talked about anywhere between 4-6rds on draft day.
Jason Glushon, Emory RHP was also impressive and you couldn’t help but think given his repertoire and solid command that if he was a lefty he’d have had a few of those scouts looking at him too. Sat around 84, threw 3 pitches with plus command, a good outing for Glushon.
Bottom line… Zimmerman was just too much for Emory.

Carthage starts of running. Castillo pulls Hobbes off the bag. Baitinger advances the second on a balk. Scores on a what was called a double by Yapp. Yapp could have been held at first with a good throw in from the outfield (IMHO). Two outs later all runs in Sadjak’s double down the left field line are unearned.
Easrern is not content to be shut-out. Scores one of their own. Hobbes ends the inning looking at strike three with two on.

Surprised that Re did not get an error on the fly to right center.
Three RBI doubles down the left field line in this game…
Good clutch 2-out single by Weiss scores the 6th run.
Gilblair is gone!!!
Well, he may be around for some work later in the weekend!

Carthage must have brought their lucky rabbits foot. Ruck’s double fell in between two outfielders close enough to whisper “I got it”. A run scoring single by Yapp hit the edge of the dirt and bounced over a waiting Castillo. The Wuis had eyes as it moved though the infield. By the time the dust settled, Carthage had a 6-1 lead.

Firteen to 2. Wow. That’s all. Just “wow”.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
Watching the Red Men running the bases are getting me tired. I am still amazed that Boe Baitinger scored from first on a single and made it look easy - man he is fast.
13-2 already with no signs of it stopping yet.

LOL!!!
Hey Big Poppa!
Carthage gonna sweep the Series? It’s 13-3 Red Men going to the 8th!
LOL!

What is the projected start time on the next game? Anyone know?
May 25th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
game starts in 5 minute
May 25th, 2007 at 6:39 pm
Both teams looking pretty decent swinging the bats…Marietta’s making Drag throw a lot of pitches early, but not capitalizing fully on their opportunities.
May 25th, 2007 at 7:41 pm
6-4 Chapman in the 6th…Knowlton out. He ranged from dominant to struggling, sometimes in the same inning. Eschbaugh on.
May 25th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
I’ll agree with Spence a little bit. At times he had solid command but nothing to write home about. The bigger surprise for me was how unimpressive Drag’s been. His command has been very spotty - labors on just about every pitch. Don’t know what or if they had him on the radar gun but after having seen Zimmerman this morning I saw a fair drop. My guess would be in the 87-88 range. Arm action is forced and he doesn’t do anything with ease. I’m sure he’ll get a shot somewhere but body/mechanics/command here today have done nothing to excite.
May 25th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
Mostly we can’t catch a break to knock him out of there. 13 hits, only 4 runs. hit some hard hit ground balls with 2 outs right at people, smashed on back at Drag and it hit him rather than going through…I think Drag is done and Mr. Yacko will see the rest of the game from the mound.
May 25th, 2007 at 8:22 pm
watching Chapman play, they remind me of a team very close to my heart……Marietta. They are solid in all aspects of the game, and although Drag didn’t pitch all that well today, they found a way to make the outs when they needed them, and get the hits with runners in scoring position.
The encouraging part for Marietta is that they are swinging the bats well, and they will need them the next few days if they have to battle through the losers bracket.
May 25th, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Or maybe they’ll go with Drag one more inning, we’ll make a dumb baserunning play to let him out of the inning easily, then they’ll blow the game open.
All goes back to not finishing off Drag when the chance was there.
May 25th, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Jeez…another chance by the boards.
May 25th, 2007 at 10:17 pm
The last game has started and the Kean crowd is small but vocal. The Cortland crowd is not much better but everyone is enjoying the game. A well pitched game so far but then again everyone is probably watching the web cast
May 26th, 2007 at 12:45 am
Time to say good bye - Will be back at it with a Kean victory 4-1 in 12 innings.
May 26th, 2007 at 5:27 am
The evidence was there for everyone to see but was ignored. Within conference Dougher was outpitched at Brockport. In the regional outpitched by Kiely and now by Zeffiro.
May 26th, 2007 at 10:38 am
It’s completely ridiculous to suggest that Dougher was somehow deficient against Trinity or Kean. They were both games that it was unfortunate that someone had to lose. Wins and losses don’t tell the story; Dougher pitched much much better than Drag, but Drag got a win and Dougher a loss.
Dougher and Zeffiro are both really, really good. Augustine vs. Kitchens should be no less special.
