Regionals day 3
May
2007
Listening to the last game of the day, it is not lost on me that this is two hours earlier than last night. The games on Thursday had all the drama that those on Wednesday provided.
I wont forget listening to the unlikely comeback for Texas Lutheran as they put six runs on the board in the ninth to take a one run lead over Pacific Lutheran only to see the game slip away when the Lutes score two of their own….and then do it again in the ninth inning to extend their game against Pomona-Pitzer, giving them time to push the winning run across in the eleventh.
I wont forget John McGraw’s D3baseball.com broadcast of the 13 inning game that Cortland State and Trinity (Conn.) played with an honest-to God pitcher’s duel.
These are some of the highlights that the World Wide Web has allowed not only I, but the many fans, supporters and parents to experience.
I hope everyone is enjoying the drama of playoff baseball as much as I and don’t forget to keep the on-line discussion going strong as we see who survives the final day before the Regional Championship games.

Friday’s ganes in Harwich have been rescheduled due to rain. The plan is to attempt to begin Saturday at noon.
And we forgot to tape all those interviews in spring training for a day-long rain delay show! Aaaaaigh!
May 18th, 2007 at 8:39 am
Hopefully they can get them in tomorrow. From my New England sources, it doesn’t look promising for a while.
For those wondering, the latest a regional championship game can start is 9 p.m. local time on Monday. If that can’t be accomplished because of weather, there is a system in place to automatically promote a team to Appleton.

SABR research shows that outcomes in 1-run and 2-run games is as much luck as anything else. Texas Lutheran is currently 37-9-1 on the season, coming thru the losers’ bracket in the West Region.
TLU’s record in their 2007 playoff games, beginning with the ASC Tourney is 7-2. In those 9 games, they are 2-1 in extra innnings, 2-1 in walk-off games and have another 1-run decision.
For the season to date, they are 17-6-1 overall in close games. They are 7-1 in extra innings, 2-4 in walk-off games, 2-0 in 1-run games and 4-1 in 2-run games plus a tie. Twenty-four of the 47 decisions for this team have been close games.
How much longer can TLU’s luck hold out is the question in the West Regionals.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:04 am
In TLU’s case it is the “good teams win close games phenomenon”. On the other hand they are in a one and done scenario and face Pac Lu.
Kiely (Trinity) outpitched Dougher (Cortland). Kiely faced a much tougher Cortland offense (probably top 5 in the nation) compared to what Dougher faced.

Error correction on TLU–
Pacific Lutheran scored 2 in the bottom of the ninth (not in extra innings) after TLU had scored 3 in the top of the 9th.
Those playoff data should read 2-0 in extra innings, 2-2 in walk-off games, and another 1-run win.
The cumulative season data show 7-0 in extra-innings, 2-5 in walk-off games, 2-0 in 1-run decisions and 4-1 in 2-run games, plus a tie.
I guess the lesson is you have to get to TLU in the bottom of the 9th or they will beat you in extra innings, if their luck can hold!

Beezy,
Interesting postion… and I could see how you can say that.
Let’s look at what took place: Dougher had to deal with some errors behind him that Kiely didn’t have to deal with. Dougher only gave up 4 hits over 11.1 innings, Kiely gave up 5 in 10.0 against a very strong line-up. Neither walked anyone… but Dougher had 14 K’s to Kiely’s 5.
AND, neither of them were around at the end to get a decision.
I think we don’t need to judge who out pitched who… as they both did a great job and we all enjoyed it!

Wooster and Otterbein are playing another great game in the Mideast Regional. Wooster is stranding base runners left and right, and Otterbein is getting a gutsy pitching performance by senior Bobby Wright. Barnes, on the mound for Wooster, has been great as well. Otterbein finally got on the scoreboard in the 6th on a 2-run double.
End of 6:
WOO - 1
OTT - 2

Ralph, there’s a lot of debate as to whether those numbers hold up at lower levels, as 99% of the research has been on the major league level. This was kicked around a bit on the South region board because Methodist has a very good record in close games dating several years back and we looked a few other teams (Marietta being one) that had a much higher than 50-50 record in 1-run or extra inning games.

mideastfan, thanks for the update…
Does anyone have an update on the Johns Hopkins - Kean game? It has been 1-0 in the bottom of the second on the scoreboard for a long time now…
May 18th, 2007 at 2:22 pm
Whoah… ask and you will receive… it just updated.
bottom of the 5th,
Johns Hopkins 4
Kean 1
May 18th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Ithaca wins over Trinity 8-1
May 18th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Wooster stranded 13 runners on the day, but a BIG 2-run homer in the 7th gave them the lead for good. Tough luck loss for Otteberbein, and pretty disappointing with all the hopes they had this season.
Final:
WOO - 3
OTT - 2
Next up in the Mideast Regional; Hope vs Ohio Wesleyan in an elimination game.
Wooster advances to face Marietta tonight at 7pm.
May 18th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Where is the love for the Redmen? Cruising through their region, up 5-2 in the 8th over Luther, riding a 17 game winning streak….
They’ve got to be the hottest team in the country!!!
May 18th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
spence, your comment about the level of play makes sense, especially if you are measuring one team at the 90th %ile and the opponent at the 80th %ile of “good”.
Chance is the probability of 99th %ile teams (MLB) winning one-run games.
May 18th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
Redmen97-
Shhhhh!!! We do not want to let the rest of the country know that Carthage has now won 18 straight games and advanced to the regional final undefeated. Let them figure it out when Carthage is the first team to punch its ticket to the World Series.
May 18th, 2007 at 6:15 pm
If the New England regional ends with a rainout what system would be in place to send a team automatically to Appleton? At the very least Keene should play Eastern to determine that b/c clearly both teams belong in the tournament and Wheaton can’t make an argument after their loss to Keene. It would be a shame to have to use a system to determine who goes rather than letting it play out.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:19 pm
In the Mideast Region, Marietta is squaring off against Wooster. Should be a great game.
Something very interesting; Wooster starting pitcher Matt Barnes already started and threw 7 innings this afternoon against Otterbein, and now is starting his 2nd game of the day!!
May 18th, 2007 at 8:19 pm
Barnes made it through 3.1 innings giving up 4 runs. I’m still confused as to why he was starting.
End of the 4th:
WOO - 0
MAR - 4
May 18th, 2007 at 9:19 pm
Wooster scored a few in the 7th and heading to the top of the 8th:
WOO - 3
MAR - 6
May 18th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
the mid-atlantic has had some pretty good games. kean is in the driver’s seat going in undefeated to the regional final. gwynedd has been somewhat of a sleeper, tied with JHU 1-1 in the 8th of the semi-final.
May 18th, 2007 at 9:45 pm
Marietta advances to championship game with a 6-3 win over Wooster. They will play Ohio Wesleyan, and only need to win ONE.
They are in the driver’s seat right now.

Here is the method for advancing to Appleton if the regional cannot be completed.
Method of determining regional champion if play cannot be completed:
Six-team tournament:
a. Up until one team becomes 3-0, the highest-seeded team that has not been eliminated will advance to the finals inAppleton.
b. If teams have an equal number of losses, the higher-seeded team, as determined by the Baseball Committee before the start of regional play, will advance to the finals in Appleton.
Seven-team tournament:
a. Up until the completion of game four the highest seeded team will advance to the finals inAppleton.
b. Up until the completion of game 9, the highest-seeded undefeated team will advance to the finals in Appleton.
c. After game 9, the undefeated team will advance to Appleton. If both teams have the same number of losses the higher-seeded team will advance to Appleton.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:12 pm
JHU goes up 2-1 over Gwynedd Mercy in the 10th.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:26 pm
Error on the scoreboard page. St. Thomas scored 2 in the ninth and lost to UWSP 6-3.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:28 pm
Also says the Tommies were eliminated?
May 18th, 2007 at 10:37 pm
I’m sure that’s quite a surprise to the Tommie fans!
May 19th, 2007 at 7:48 am
Sorry, guys, I was going by the box score on the UWSP regional web site, which still to this moment says 6-1.
