As the opening day of regionals gets underway, we know you are out there watching (on D3Cast), listening (on D3baseball.com or your local stations) and tracking (on live stats).
Got a note to share, an observation, a comment? Bring it here, share with the group.
First note from New York, the rain is still coming down and they are hoping to start the 10 a.m. game at noon. I’ve got D3Cast’s broadcast from New England on my screen … though of course, I’m also at work today, and I have a fair amount of actual work today.

Time to Play the Games
I read all the debate and enjoyed most of it. Thanks. Now it’s time to play the games. Of the filed of 53 there are 33 conference champions. Of those 33 there were 11 teams rated in the May 8, 2007 ABCA poll. I suggest we leave these out of the debate. That leaves us with 22 conference champs that were not rated in the poll and 20 other teams. Of those 20 there were 13 that were rated in the poll and 7 that weren’t. Let’s follow the fate of these three groups and see how many 1, 2, BBQ and finalist come out of each group. Any predictions?

Thanks — I moved your post here as we start a new post for game day. It seemed appropriate here too.
May 16th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
FYI, Wooster’s Mideast Regional page has audio and stats links that I’m not seeing links to on the scoreboard page.
http://athletics.wooster.edu/base/news/2007/regional/default.php
Great job so far…really like the national scoreboard!
May 16th, 2007 at 1:52 pm
methodist and b’water in a slugfest - mu winning 18-12 with 2 out in the top 1/2 of the 8th…
May 16th, 2007 at 2:06 pm
Spence,
Thanks. We have to get those in ourselves and the software wasn’t written until this morning so we’re still loading those things in.
May 16th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Looks like some excitement for Keene State this morning. Sorry I missed it online.
May 16th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
Bottom of the 4th… Williams 4 Western New England 2…
Benz for Williams and Smolin for WNE
May 16th, 2007 at 3:05 pm
St. Scholastica just imploded in the bottom of the seventh. UW-Stevens Point P Jordan Zimmerman led off with a homer and a hit, hit by pitch, couple errors and a wild pitch later, Stevens Point had put six runs on the board and now leads Scholastica 9-3 after seven.
May 16th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
Final: St. Scholastica 11-3.
May 16th, 2007 at 3:49 pm
Adam Kohls threw a complete-game five-hitter as Luther beat Augustana 3-1. The one run was unearned. He threw 146 pitches, according to Luther radio.
May 16th, 2007 at 4:02 pm
Trinity 15
Manhattanville 6
M’Ville cuts a 7-1 Trinity lead to 7-6 and has the tying run thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the 6th by LF Matt Stafford who later homered. Bantams score 3 in the 7th and coast from there.
May 16th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Obviously Trinity beat them…Trinity doesn’t deserve this birth, but give me a break with this region…of course Trinity will cruise to at least the semi-finals of this region.
May 16th, 2007 at 5:17 pm
WNEC over Williams 10-5…yet another New England region upset…I think Wheaton and EConn will take care of business in the remainder of today’s games.
May 16th, 2007 at 5:32 pm
Just to give all of the Mideast Region fans a heads up. Wooster’s web site will be down for most of the night for some schedule maintenance. Those wanting to listen to the Marietta game can go to http://pioneers.marietta.edu/onlinebroadcasts.html. In addition, live stats will be available at http://pioneers.marietta.edu/livestats/xlive.htm. Mills Field does not have high speed Internet. Therefore, I will be updated stats from a very slow dial up line. Please be patient and enjoy the game.
May 16th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
IWU just threw a Webster runner out trying to score from second on a single, ending the top of the sixth and preserving the 5-5 tie.
May 16th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
The mideast region website is down for a little while but the Otterbein vs Ohio Wesleyan game is being broadcast by the Otterbein radio guys (http://ocwobn.otterbein.edu/wobn.htm).
The game was delayed because of rain; heading to the bottom of the 4th:
OWU - 2
OTT - 2
*** side note - what is up with some o f the high runs totals so far today? I’ve been around regional baseball for a long time, and day one is usaully dominated by strong pitching. If a team gives up 7 or more runs, there is something up with their so called “ACE.”
May 16th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
Mayday — thanks for the heads-up. You guys can still always use our scoreboard, as we offered to Wooster earlier in the week.
May 16th, 2007 at 6:11 pm
mayday: Thanks, will definitely be listening to the WMOA feed.
Who is pitching for Otterbein? I assumed it was Stevens but can’t be sure with Powell.
mideastfan: No idea what happened in the South region. Neither Read nor Toth had pitched badly this year, though neither was really dominant. Just glad my upset pick to win the region slugged their way through it.
May 16th, 2007 at 6:21 pm
Rem is throwing for Otterbein. Jones for OWU had a no-hitter through the first 4 2/3 innings, but gave up 2 unearned runs in the 1st.
After 6 innings:
OWU - 2
OTT - 2
May 16th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
I wish my computer didn’t dislike Otterbein so much. I haven’t been able to successfully load their feed all season. Stupid computer, Wooster’s the one you’re supposed to not like!
I’m surprised Remo is starting against OWU; maybe Powell is playing it safe with what happened last year in mind.
May 16th, 2007 at 6:38 pm
End of 7:
OWU - 2
OTT - 4
Otterbein scored their first 3 runs on sac flies. Rem is in a groove and should be able to hold serve the last 2 innings.
May 16th, 2007 at 6:47 pm
I hate when I speak too soon…..OWU is rallying in the 8th. Score now tied 4-4 with one out and runners on the corners. OWU has just gotten 4 straight singles.
May 16th, 2007 at 6:49 pm
double play, middle of the 8th:
OWU - 4
OTT - 4
May 16th, 2007 at 7:00 pm
Booby Wright hits a solo shot to give Ottebein the lead 5-4 in the bottom of the 8th. They have now loaded the bases with one out, and forced a pitching change by OWU.
May 16th, 2007 at 7:08 pm
Otterbein has broken it open with a big 8th inning, sending 10 men to the plate. Heading to the ninth:
OWU - 4
OTT - 9
May 16th, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Spence — I couldn’t load their feed either in anything but Internet Explorer. Did you try that browser? Worked for me last weekend.
May 16th, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Might try that, as I use Firefox.
May 16th, 2007 at 7:11 pm
If anybody has interest in the New England Regional or just wants to watch a game I would HIGHLY recommend going to http://www.d3cast.com. Live streaming video, multiple camera angles, pretty good video quality, and they have replays (that is the part I am amazed by).
Check it out. Games have gone slow so far so they should be on until very late.
May 16th, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Did OWU leave Jones in too long?
May 16th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
Fianl from the mideast region:
OWU - 4
OTT - 9
I’m not sure if Jones was left in too long, or Otterbein just finally got to him. It was a quick few runs, then the reliever came in and gave up a quick few hits and before you knew it, Otterbein was up by 5.
May 16th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Well, I’m just glad they used Remo, though of course we still have to take care of business tonight in a game that won’t be easy at all.
May 16th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
mideast: have they announced a start time for the Marietta game? Website says approx 8.
May 16th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
I have to agree with Don Mattingly on the d3cast of New England games. I watched some of the WNEC/Williams game and was very surprised at the quality. The good news is the cost is equal to the single digit number starting with a Z that was mentioned in another blog. Been a great day so far, lets hope the weather lets up in the regions having trouble.
May 16th, 2007 at 8:35 pm
They have been pushed back to 8:40 for Marietta.
May 16th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Thanks…Johnny just hit the air.
May 16th, 2007 at 9:17 pm
Jordan Baitinger of Ripon has a no-hitter through six innings against St. Olaf. The Red Hawks lead 4-0.
May 16th, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Correction, the Oles are hitting in the sixth, not through the sixth.
May 16th, 2007 at 9:23 pm
The Oles tack get on the board with a HBP, FC, E6 and RBI groundout. The no-hitter is still in tact, but its now 4-1 Red Hawks.
May 16th, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Rob Sanzillo hit a three-run walkoff homer to lead Johns Hopkins past Elizabethtown 5-4.
That’s the 1 p.m. game in that regional, delayed more than five and a half hours by rain. The Frostburg State/Kean game is moved to tomorrow.
May 16th, 2007 at 10:06 pm
Jordan Baitinger of Ripon completes a NO-HITTER of St. Olaf. He gives up one unearned run, struck out 5, walked 2 and hit one batter. Ripon wins 4-1 and will play St. Thomas tomorrow. St. Olaf will try to avoid elimination against UW-Stevens Point.
Anyone have any info on the last no-hitter in the NCAA Tournament?
May 16th, 2007 at 10:19 pm
audio clip of that game on the front page.
The broadcaster said it was the second no-no in D-III NCAA Tournament history but didn’t source it, didn’t say who the other was. I don’t have time to look right now.
May 16th, 2007 at 10:25 pm
Norm Charlesworth of Rowan threw a no-hitter against Johns Hopkins on May 15, 1980. Coincidentally the final score of that game was also 4-1.

Just so everyone knows, Wheaton is in the 12th inning vs Curry right now. It’s 6-6 and an unreal game.
May 17th, 2007 at 1:45 am
Enter the 16th…still tied at 6.
May 17th, 2007 at 2:01 am
Wheaton wins 7-6 in 16 innings. Official time of game 4 hrs 50 mins. Ended at 1:55 am, ridiculous game.
May 17th, 2007 at 7:23 am
Yeah, I was about five minutes away from making a Jerry Lewis Telethon reference at two in the morning. Thanks to all who watched and said kind things…. back at it in a few hours!
May 17th, 2007 at 9:24 am
D3Cast, thanks for the good job!
The New England Regional teams owe Curry a dead of gratitude for taking Wheaton so deep into extra innings. That 16-inning game virtually neutralizes any advantage that #1 seed Wheaton enjoyed.
When did Wheaton get back to the hotel? When did the players unwind the emotional tension sufficiently to fall asleep? They have a 4:30 pm game, only 14 hours 35 minutes after the Curry game. Keene has a great chance to jump on Wheaton early!

I’ve opened a Day 2 blog. You can definitely continue to discuss Day 1 and its aftermath here, but we’re also ready to discuss Day 2.
