NCAA regional rankings, third release
May
2007
The NCAA Division III baseball committee released its third regional rankings of the 2007 season Thursday afternoon.
The number of teams ranked is relative to the number of teams in each region. These rankings take into account the same criteria the NCAA will use to select and seed at-large teams for the playoffs.

Just as a point of order — the NCAA will create another regional ranking on Selection Sunday. However, this is the last one we’ll see.
May 10th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
how could frostburg state play more than 40 games is that legal not including playoffs
May 10th, 2007 at 5:02 pm
They’re sitting at 41 right now. I’m not aware of the specifics.
May 10th, 2007 at 7:04 pm
NY ECAC starts tomorrow and goes throughout the weekend… what are the chances of any of those teams getting an ‘at-large’?
Oneonta, RIT, St. John Fisher, Oswego I believe…
May 10th, 2007 at 7:33 pm
It probably follows the regional rankings, I would say. SJF would have the best shot.
May 10th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
Can some one please help me find some logic as to why Ripon is ranked 5th (or at all) in the Midwest Region? St. Norbert won their league, have a better overall record, have a better in region record, and just beat Ripon 3 out 4.
May 10th, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Actually Skinny, SNC’s in-region record is only 16-7-1 (.688) versus Ripon’s 15-5 (.750).
SNC’s record versus in-region ranked teams is only 1-3 (or 4-4 counting Ripon) versus Ripon’s 2-0.
The head-to-head of SNC vs. Ripon doesn’t out weigh those other Primary Criteria as stated in the Handbook.
I think that only one MWC gets a bid.

This is my first year to predict the baseball picks, so I am not too sure about the bids, especially not having the QOWI’s!!!
I also am assuming no major upsets in the 13 tourneys this week
May 10th, 2007 at 9:30 pm
Shucks! I cannot edit my blog. So, I will think out loud.
For my (six!) Pool B bids (LOL)
Chapman, Emory, Salisbury, Ithaca, Wash StL, York PA
Make SJF my #12 (and I am assuming that there are QOWI numbers that I don’t have), GFU my #13 and then I put Millsaps on the bubble as #14.
I find it hard to imagine that anyone region would not get at least one Pool C bid, especially the New York Region.
I am assuming that W&J sweeps the Pres AC to earn 3 more wins to solidify their Pool C bid as a “B”. (The Pres AC has a Pool A next year.)
I am looking for Ramapo to come off at #11.
May 10th, 2007 at 11:08 pm
SJF still your #12 without the ECAC championship this weekend?
May 11th, 2007 at 12:16 am
wazahere,
Thanks for pointing that out. In the absence of having QOWI’s, I thought that SJF would come off the table from the New York region when I ran the picks. I thought it a bit too much for the New York Region to only get a Pool B bid and no Pool C bids. If SJF were to add 3 more wins to their season, that would help in-region percentage and QOWI both.
Not living in the ECAC territory, I do not think of that tourney, routinely.
I have emailed Bob Maxwell, John McGraw and Pat Coleman to come into the discussion.

Montclair beats Salisbury today, has two against Ithaca this weekend, and took 2 out of 3 from ramapo. If they sweep Ithaca, can they come back into the picture as a pool C bid, def not in the Mid-Atlantic, but maybe a New York or South Bid
May 11th, 2007 at 1:12 am
dthree, Montclair will be evaluated by the Mid-Atlantic Evaluation Committee. Ithaca is 211 miles away, and is not in-region game by any definition.
Two out of three from Ramapo might help, but I think that there are too many ranked teams across the nation ahead of MSU.
May 11th, 2007 at 1:14 am
Correction — Montclair to Ithaca is 202 miles. Therefore not in-region.
May 11th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
i believe so as well…region games are determined by the coaches though correct? and they technically do not have to go to the mid-atlantic region, i think they have no shot at that..but rowan did go south last year…as an njac fan i was just curious if we could see 3 teams from the njac go… i am just worried that msu has way too many loses to have a shot, but they play a tough schedule, and are highly respected? will any of that be in the back of the committees minds?

Definition of regional game:

May 11th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
Dthree, let’s not confuse where a qualifying team is seeded and bracketed with the mechanism for making the tourney.
Montclair will be evaluated by the committee in the primary criteria from the games in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The local region will send its list of teams, in descending order, with the Mid-Atlantic Region rep to the National Committee. Then, the National Selection committee will work off the 8 lists to determine the best team on the table for each of the 14 rounds.
Unless something major happens this weekend, I see the committee looking at Kean first, then Ramapo next. Until those 2 teams are seeded, then Alvernia, Arcadia and everyone list deeper in the queue, including Montclair State, are waiting thru all 14 rounds of the Pool C selection process.
After the 53 teams are seeded, then the green-eyeshade folks (have the younger readers ever heard of that figure of speech for a number-cruncher) will seed the brackets.
I hope that clarifies the process.

What are Washington and Jeffersons chances of getting into the tournament? and right now Capital is 2-0 in the OAC so if they win that will marietta and otterbein both be put in the tourney in front of W&J even though W&J has a better overall record than both of them?
May 11th, 2007 at 4:01 pm
Ralph, what do you make of Babson’s ranking in the most recent poll? I know we have discussed them throughout the season, and now they are finally ranked in the region. My thoughts are that if EConn and Williams hold serve and win their conferance tournaments, Keene State will likely take one of the at-large bids, and if another is awarded, which woudn’t be unlikely given the strength of the region, I think it would be given to Babson over Trinity. Trinity didn’t make their conferance touney, and Babson was a runner-up in their conferance tournament. The handbook states that only 5 of the 15 pool C bids can be from non runner-ups, which makes Trinity’s chances even less. Also, their strong win percentage will be overlooked based on the weak schedule they have played, as well as their poor performance vs ranked opponents. Your thoughts?
May 11th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
What are Washington and Jeffersons chances of making nationals?
May 11th, 2007 at 6:28 pm
B2, the number of Pool B bids is 6 and I have considered them in my list.
For the 14 Pool C bids, I don’t see Trinity CT or Babson getting in, unless I have underestimated the unseen numbers from the New England Region. If USM pulls out the LEC bid, then I think that only KSC and ECSU go. Right now KSC and ECSU are taking care of business.
I don’t know whether the committee will value Trinity’s .800 (24-6) percentage or Babson’s .622 (23-14) in-region winning percentage.
May 11th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
B2, I am away from my notes.
The fine print on games against in-region ranked team is “results”. There have been many times that results have beenc onstrued as a teams willingness to schedule good teams. So a 3-5 record might be viewed as a team that scheduled 8 games with good teams. A 2-0 record might be valued for its 1.000 percentage but devalued because the team only played 2 games against ranked opponents.
I don’t know why the committee ranked Trinity ahead of Babson on Thursday. If only one New England team makes Pool C, then we may never know.
May 11th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
Ok, so what I think your saying, is this. If Williams and EConn finish up their conferance tourney’s and get the auto-bids, then Keene wil take the first Pool C bid from New England. If they take 2 Pool C bids, it will be either Trinity or Babson, and right now your not sure who will get it. Your saying this depends if the comitee values Babson’s weaker percentage, but with a harder schedule more than they value Trinity’s stronger percentage, but with a easier schedule. Let me know if this is what you meant.
May 11th, 2007 at 7:19 pm
Yes. I don’t have in-region Ranked teams results, QOWI’s, in-region head-to-head results, in-region results versus common opponents.
If they are taking 2 Pool C bids, then that means that the #2 Pool C from New England was better than anything left on the table at that time.
Good luck to Babson.
May 11th, 2007 at 7:51 pm
If W&J wins the Pres AC, they get a Pool C bid as a Pool B team, IMHO.
May 11th, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Marietta went two in out in the OAC tourney, are they done for sure now or do they have a chance at at large bid?
May 12th, 2007 at 1:14 am
Thanks Ralph, we’ll see what happens come Monday Mourning Madness. It’s gonna be exciting.
May 12th, 2007 at 5:29 pm
Ralph, I don’t know if playing in the ECAC tournament takes a team from the NCAA pool… I don’t think it does. As they can only play in ECAC IF they have games still available to play… AND time on their declared playing season.
It will be very interesting to see who will get a Pool C bid from NY. As everyone has beaten each other all season long. And I agree with you, I can’t see a region NOT getting at least one Pool C bid.
May 12th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
It will definately be interesting to see who gets a bid….if you take in consideration everything in the primary criteria….how Brockport isnt ranked in the NY region is hard to realize. Fisher would possible have to be the front runner….but with teams beating each other up all year its a tough call
May 12th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
ralph you think ramapo still has a good shot to make the tourney?
May 12th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
baseballcrazy, with all of the upsets that we have seen this week, I don’t know yet about Ramapo.
My general impression is that it would be hard for the National Selection Committee to say that a particular region did not have the 14th best Pool C team, so I think that each region gets one Pool C bid.
How the other 6 bids are distributed is for some work tonight.
I will post my picks late tonight/early tomorrow when some of the dust settles.
