Indoor baseball, continued

It’s pushing the midnight hour here in Minneapolis and, as I write this, a young child is being carried on a back up the stairs to the concourse level. And UW-Superior is tied up with Waldorf 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning. Waldorf’s Zack Etter parked a bomb to center, two sections to the left of the 408 sign that ricocheted off the railing and about 15 rows further back. Definitely the furthest hit ball I have seen here outside of MLB and Big Ten.

In the time it took me to do the rest of my job, Superior scored on a stolen base, single to third and a throwing error: 5-4 in seven.

Great games, it is definitely a little chillier in here but the latter game was definitely more exciting. Look for photo galleries from both games I saw tonight shortly.

Tomorrow I return for St. Mary’s vs Dickinson State University (11 a.m.) and Mt. Mercy vs Hamline (3:45 p.m.).

I keep looking in my basketball travels to see if I can pick up a baseball game in between and I am getting dates for home openers such as March 29, April 1 and April 14. :(

Many of these schools may not see home openers until much later in April. St. Scholastica could have snow-outs from the lake into May. It’s a small price to pay but, for these schools playing in the Metrodome, the price to play indoors without having the massive expense of traveling to southern climates is worthwhile.

Anyone in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area that wants to see good baseball, you should come down to the dome. You can find the schedule on the Metrodome website at http://www.msfc.com/events.cfm and click on any link that says “Metrodome College Baseball”. Admission is $5.00 and goes to help offset the cost to each program involved.

Earlier this afternoon St. Mary’s and Dickinson State (N.D.) squared off and played two complete 7-inning games in less than three hours.

Hamline met up with Mount Mercy (Cedar Rapids, IA) and jumped to an early 6-0 lead. Currently they are leading 6-1 in the bottom of the 4th inning of the first game.
We just saw two balls lost to the ceiling, one of which was called an Infield fly and Troy Mallat (Hamline’s SID) and I have been trying to determine how to score the play. Earlier we saw a pickoff to third that went into the left field bullpen because the third baseman wasn’t holding the runner on, three balls fly near the first base camera well, an amazing play at home on a botched double-steal and an incredible catch by Hamline first baseman Bill Sand in the same camera well.

And, just now, Brandon Bradley hit the upper deck in right field, a 430-foot blast to bring the score to 6-5 Hamline. “That was a blast” said Troy. If any of you know the Metrodome, it hit the camera well above the entrance ramp in section 211, just off the RF side of the football press box and about 30 feet above it.

Hamline won the first game 6-5.
