It is a beautiful day for baseball in Abilene, TX. The Chapman fans with whom I spoke in the parking lot noticed that the wind had changed from blowing from right-center field to blowing out. Normal afternoon highs in Abilene in the late February are in the low 60’s. It might make it today.

McM Senior RHP Nick Schafer retired the Panthers in the top half of the first. In the bottom half, CF Joseph Cervantes doubled to right, RF George Whitten bunted him to third and DH Derek David singled him home.

After a 1-2-3 top of the second, McM leftfielder Lance Jones got on via throwing error, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on @B Evan Reece’s Sac Fly to right.

In the bottom of the third, McM’s Whitten walks off Chapman starter Wayde Kitchens, DH David singles, Casey walks to load the bases and Jones gets a 2-RBI single.

In the bottom of the fifth, McM DH Hank Casey doubled and Reece singled him home, 5-0 after 5.

  2. Ralph Turner Says:

McMurry pitcher Nick Schafer has just finished 6 innings of 3-hit ball, facing only 2 batters over the minimum.

Chapman pitcher Wayde Kitchens returns to the mound in the bottom of the 6th to face the bottom of the order, SS Nathan Love getting him, third to first. Kitchens walked Cervantes but then doubled him up back at first when Whitten flew out to left field on the hit-and-run.

  3. Ralph Turner Says:

Top of the seventh, Nick Schafer returns to the mound. Chapman 1B Patrick O’Hail gets a fly ball up into the air to left field for a solo home run. McMurry 5, Chapman 1, going to the bottom of the 7th.

  4. Ralph Turner Says:

Chapman’s Kitchens retruns to the mound for the bottom of the 7th. Third baseman Derek David grounds to left, 1B Brent Voorhess hits into a 6-4-3 double play. DH Hank Casey walks on the full count pitch, Jones walks on a 3-2 pitch and Evan Reece is called on strikes. McM, 5-1.

  5. Ralph Turner Says:

Schafer on the mound in the top of the 8th. No runs, one hit, no errors and one man left on base. McM leads 5-1.

Bottom of the eighth, Chapman right-handed reliever Matt Ricatto.

  6. Ralph Turner Says:

Bottom of the 8th for McMurry, no runs, a hit by Nathan Love, no errors and one man left on base.

McMurry’s #10 Clint Johnson (RHP) will relieve in the top of the 9th and face Ryan Cavan to start the inning.

  7. Ralph Turner Says:

In the Chapman 9th, Cavan flies to the shortstop in shallow left field, Dean flies to right and Hyman grounds to short.

Final McMurry 5, Chapman 1. Winning pitcher Nick Schafer. Losing pitcher Wayde Kitchens.

  8. Ralph Turner Says:

Chapman has bounced back in the nightcap.

Ryan Prechtel got a lead-off single, Trinity TX transfer Ryan Cavan singled, Tyler Dean got a RBI-Double, Stuart Hyman brought home Cavan on a ground-out, Patrick Ohail brought home Dean on Sac Fly to center, 3 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors, 0 LOB.

In the bottom of the first, McMurry’s Joseph Cervantes led off with a double and was brought home on Brent Voorhees RBI single. Chapman 3-1, end of 1.

Top of the second, Chapman’s Steve Fraser singled, advanced to second on Kurt Yacko’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Kyle Redding’s double. At the top of the order, Ryan Prechtel got an RBI double to score Redding, went to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on the double steal. Ryan Cavan was hit by the pitcher and made the third out on the back side of the double steal. 3 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors, no one left on base.

After two innings Chapman leads 6-1.

  9. Ralph Turner Says:

In the top of the 3rd, with McMurry’s starting pitcher Hank Casey on the mound, Ohail walked and Pearson hit the 2-run homer to right. Coach Driggers brought on Blaine Wieck in relief.

Chapman leads 8-7 going to the bottom of the 3rd.

  10. Ralph Turner Says:

Typo above…Chapman leads 8-1 thru 3. Matt Luzar retired McM in the bottom of the 3rd with the help of a 4-6-3 double play. No runs, 1 hit, 1 error (on the SS) one LOB.

  11. Ralph Turner Says:

In the top of the 4th, Chapman manufactured another run. Redding singled, went to seond on Prechtel’s sac Bunt, and to third on a wild pitch. Ryan Cavan walked and Tyler Dean brought home Redding on a Sac Fly. Chapman leads 9-1.

  12. Ralph Turner Says:

In the McMurry 4th, Chapman pitcher Matt Luzar struck out the side. Luzar has looked good and has the batters swinging in front of the pitches.

    Chapman leads 9-1 thru 4.

  13. Ralph Turner Says:

In the top of the 5th, the Chapman bats have come alive again and scored three runs. Dakota Smith, a Freshman RHP from Lampasas is brought into face Ryan Cavan who promptly gets a hard hit 2-RBI single past the glove of the second baseman. Smith gets Ohail to ground out to second. Chapman 14-1. Five runs, 6 hits, 0 errors and 2 LOB.

  14. Ralph Turner Says:

The Chapman pitcher, Matt Luzar, has pitched very well today. Both managers are starting to substitute freely now.

I am certain that the Chapman faithful have been screaming at their defense this weekend, but Luzar sat for a long time during the top of the 5th. He struck out the first batter, gave up a single to Cervantes, walked the next batter and then was tagged by Derek David with a sharp brounder up the middle. Ryan Cavan dives to his left and starts the Cavan to Redding to Hurst (6-4-3) double play to get Luzar out of the inning.

    Chapman 14, McMurry 1.

  15. Ralph Turner Says:

Bottom of the 6th, Brent Voorhees hits a solo HR high up on the left field screen and McMurry gets 1 run and 2 hits. Chapman has its 3rd error and McM leaves the bases loaded.

    Chapman 14-2.

  16. Ralph Turner Says:

Chapman put up a 4-run 7th and McMurry put up a single run in the bottom of the 7th.

    Final Score
    Chapman 18, McM 3.

  17. Ralph Turner Says:

I had the good pleasure to meet Coach Tom Tereschuk after the game. He said that he was quite pleased that Chapman was able to bounce back after McM’s Nick Schafer’s pitching performance in the first game.

Chapman takes the series 2 games to one on a strong pitching effort by Devin Drag last night and exploding bats in the second day today.

Travel safely, Chapman. I personally hope that McMurry and Chapman can continue this good West Region rivalry.

  18. Ralph Turner Says:

After the game, I found out that this was Nick Schafer’s first appearance on the mound since his shoulder surgery two years ago. His parents were relieved that the ordeal and the rehab was over, and he could get back on the mound.

He was in great control all afternoon and only had a pitch count of 92. By my guess, it looked like he had about 37 balls and 55 strikes. He “pitched” a good game, i.e., good pitch selection, moving the ball around the plate, changing speed, everything one likes to see in a well-pitched game.

How did it feel to get out and see some baseball? Can you send that weather up this way at all? :)

It’s great to see top National teams travel to play good competition. Props to those teams, along with Ithica who will travel out west to face Chapman; and Marietta who heads south to face McMurry and other Texas teams over their spring break.
